Thanks for all the comments. I’m going to take it to a discount tire and get the professionally done plug/patch combo and hope for the best.

I picked up two of those, about a year apart, both times in the RF tire. I got them patched at Sam's Club, and have had no issues. I'm running stock tires on an Overland with mostly freeway driving.

Discount Tire will plug it and apply a patch over it. You’ll be fine to do whatever.

@NoDoorsNoProblem, Discount Tire will plug/patch it free. It's in the perfect for the plug/patch.

@OHJeeper, that's a tough break, the one near the sidewall may not be repairable.

@Discount Tire , good news: it missed the sidewall, still in the tread. I just left your location in Lewis Center: great service as always!

I carry a plug kit in my bike. I actually had a screw in my JT last week. I attempted a plug but could not shove the first step cleaner/reamer tool or whatever it's called into the hole even with letting it air down so I went to Discount for a patch.

Forgot to update... the tech at Discount Tire's brother is a policeman. He said it looked an awful lot like the spikes they use for disabling vehicles. If you look closely, these are not screws, they are definitely spikes of some kind. He said they are designed to break off the main assembly when they get run over and eventually get flung out of the tire, which opens the puncture holes they created.

I have no idea if he's right, but makes for an interesting story...
