I totally believe you, it's the other guy & 30mph deal I totally know is not right .There is no 30 mph to turn on the air bag system. Turn the ignition on, car not moving, they can work. You don't need to get up to 30 in order for air bags to work.
- Airbags are activated (able to inflate if necessary) only when the ignition switch is turned to the ON or START position.
- Accessory Mode: If you turn the key to "ACC" (accessory) or "ON," the airbag system is armed and can deploy, even without the engine running.
- Momentary Power: After the engine is turned off, the system retains power for a few minutes (or longer), allowing for deployment if a crash occurs shortly after stopping.
From IIHS:
Newer airbags have a safety belt sensor and use an algorithm to decide whether to deploy the bag in a given crash, depending on whether people are using safety belts.
For unbelted occupants, a front airbag will typically deploy when the crash is the equivalent of an impact into a rigid wall at 10-12 mph. For belted occupants, most airbags will deploy at a higher threshold — about 16 mph — because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.
