Hey everyone,

We've all been there – needing to air up tires, inflate camping gear, or even power air tools. When it comes to air pumps, there are two main camps: the portable crew and the fixed (on-board) enthusiasts. Both have their loyal followers, and for good reason! But which one truly reigns supreme in terms of convenience, performance, and overall utility?

Let's break down some of the common arguments for each, and then we want to hear from you!

Which Team Are You On?
Are you a proponent of the grab-and-go portable air pump, valuing its flexibility and cost-effectiveness? Or do you lean towards the always-ready, high-performance fixed system, appreciating its seamless integration and power?

Looking for The Best Air Compressor in 2026?
Wolfbox HyperFlow X on-board air compressor tested by our group member, proven to be robust product with high-performance.

Hard Wire Connection
· The famous one: Hardwired with 2GA Copper wire from Battery to back of Bronco and mounted.
· Wolfbox Hyperflow X: Temporary connection using Jumper Cable to Battery from Positive and Jumper Cable to Ground from Negative
Hose Connection: Bulldog 4 hose inflation system used on both.
· The famous one: Connected to installed air chuck on bumper which has 4 feet of 3/8” Stainless Steel braided hose between compressor and chuck on bumper
· Wolfbox Hyperflow X: Inflation system connected directly to compressor chuck
Actual Inflation Time for all 4 tires: Ford Bronco – BFG KO2 35” Tires. Inflation from 19lbs to 40lbs
· The famous one Time: 6:45:12
· Wolfbox Hyperflow X Time: 5:15.69
Sound – The Wolfbox seems to be quieter, however, I will not really know until it is installed inside the rig.

I kinda like both. Hard mount for lockers and a portable hard mounted for air up/down. Reason being on the portable hard mounted is in my experience those fail sooner than the ones for the lockers. The easier it is for me to get it out and changed for a new one the better my life is. As far as brands go for lockers my go to is ARB. Portables I’ve used cheapos from Harbor Freight and Napa and now have a Thor’s Lightning which is really working well. You really do get what you pay for sometimes.

I've had both.

For the portable, I cut the factory alligator clips and added an anderson powerpole connector and for the battery side, I made a pig tail with ring terminals that were full time connected to the battery. That way, I did not have to lift the hood every time I aired up. I also put a connector for the original alligator clips to maintain portablility for other vehicles.
Now I have the old twin sitting under the hood. I had it in the bed for a bit, but wanted it out of the way. It's been a while, but I think I liked it more back in the bed. Sometimes, the engine bay feels a little crowded. 🤣

Same/similar here, actually.

My previous JK had the compressor hard mounted under the hood with the outlet by the front bumper. It was handy.

My current Jeep, I use a portable compressor. I have a Deutsch connector at the front bumper to plug my Viair into.

If I am using the compressor with my truck, I just plug it into the bumper connector. If I need to use it elsewhere, the alligator clips the compressor came with plug right into the connector I added on the compressor.

I don't wheel like I used to so having flexibility with the compressor was more desirable this time.

I'm a 'soft' rocker but want to be able to air down and back up on very rare occasions. So a portable Viair is my choice. I was surprised at how quickly it would go from 20psi to 40psi.

So many choices, but for me a Viair portable fit the bill. I don't off-road often and I can take it with
me on trips when we use the family vehicle. For those who routinely air down I can see advantages
to built-in permanent type. Apples & oranges.

I went with fixed under the fender mount. Grimm OffRoad ARB Twin Compressor Mounting Bracket with added heat shields. JACO Hi-Flo Quick Connect Air Hose Fittings

Ran two 3/8 air lines to each side of the jeep with custom made coupler covers.
Drilled and taped each wheel for large bore tank valves

I can air up two 38'' tires from 10psi to 25psi in about 3 minutes.
The Compressor also runs my pneumatic front factory sway bar disconnect.

Great timing...
Pros and Cons for both for sure.
I am starting out with the portable kind first, if I find it too laborious I'll switch to a on board type.
The model I use now I bought on sale at HF, it's a Maddox I forgot the # of it. It has a different type of quick connection that doesn't match any other tip in my garage, can you tell me what it's called?

Whatever happened to the AC pump conversions???

I've been looking at getting a portable one. Then semi-permanently mounting it with a quick disconnect setup. That way I can use it other ways also.

Those haven’t been around for quite a while. I used to see them on some older rigs but haven’t in the past decade or so. They were good systems just very labor intensive to install.

Modern rigs definitely don't have the room like my old CJ had.

The old Chrysler twin AC compressors were durable pumped pretty well and ran a long time as an air compressor. I am not sure how long or how much you would have to do to get a modern compressor to last and where you would fit it if you wanted to keep your existing AC.

I have always used a small portable tire inflator. I have a Vevor 10.6 CFM twin cylinder for around $100 they seem similar to all the other imported singles and twins out there and it has been quick and durable. It takes less than a minute per tire to air up so under 4 minutes for the four. I thought of mounting it but considered i do not need it all the time and it is easy to help out other do tires without having to move vehicles around.

I'm definitely in the fixed category. ARB twin compressor in a housing on the drivers side back wall of my Gladiator. I use it all the time, filling tires on the Harley and the wife unit's Lexus neither of which maintain air like my Toyo tires on the Gladiator.

More importantly "friends" can't borrow it like they can a portable. I came home from my 4 months in the Florida Keys to find one of my SnapOn electronic torque wrench's, a circular saw, other saws and cutters, and my pressure washer disc missing.

Have been able to get back everything but the pressure washer disc which forced me to buy another one last week.
I absolutely hate loaning out my tools but I hate worse being a total dick and not loaning them when I do have what they need.

If you can't trust family and friends to borrow the tools AND return them that very night, which each agreed to---then who the hell can you trust?? I literally got the stuff back months after they borrowed it and well after I'd forgotten who I lent the items to.

Oh by the way, my rule is not to return it from where they got the item but to my work table in the garage. I want to see that the item came back clean and functional. And with the batteries taken out of it if it's battery operated like the torque wrench.

Picture below is of the Compressor in action in conjunction with the SpeedFlate system which allows me to air down or air up all four tires to the exact same PSI. Used it in late April during my recent Badge of Honor trail runs on my way back to Missouri. Absolutely love it because it saves so much time.

I am using an AllTop portable dual stage right now, but I will be going to a Grimm Offroad fender mount ARB. I don’t have a lot of room in the bed, so if I can relocate the compressor and not have to get it out and hook it up, then it’s all the better. However, it was nice that I was using a portable compressor when I wrecked my last truck. It was easy to salvage it. 😂
