Good day, my ride - 2023 Jeep Gladiator with 29k miles. When the jeep site overnight or longer at startup it puffs blue smoke for a moment out of the exhaust. during the day running around town, no noticeable blue smoke at startup. I’ve check the oil level multiple times, it’s good and clean. I pulled the PCV hose line from the intake tub before startup to test a PCV valve issue, it still puffed smoke at startup. Again the jeep has to sit for 14 hrs or longer on my blue smoke concerns. My thoughts a valve guide or valve guide seal?

thoughts, suggestions?

If it is only at start up it's probably got oil build up into the intake manifolds. This could be caused by excessive blow back and it takes awhile for it to run down and pool up. The Nissan 3.6L and titan 5.6L were horrible with it.

2023 so take it in to the dealership of your choice and let them sort it out. You’re still under the bumper to bumper warranty and the powertrain.

They’ll probably ask to keep it over a few days, if they’re decent they’ll give you a rental, if they don’t then call Jeep and demand it (been there, done that).

Be cordial and just hold the line that Jeep needs to make it right.

Mine did that periodically, only on startup and had to sit at least 12 hours. A pattern developed where it would do it when air filter was seeing minor restriction. Either blow out or change air filter and wouldn’t see it again for several months. I never ran nanometer in intake so I have no idea what actual restriction of inHG. I concluded possibly with shitty PCV design compounded with the excess negative pressure in intake drafted more oil through PVC, because why would a PCV valve be on top of valve cover, everyone knows it makes more sense to stick it on the head where the oil is……

When I have seen this in the past, but with engines that a bit higher mileage, the issue has been the valve stem seals. Oil leaks down into the combustion chamber and burns off quickly on first start up.

Sounds like a certified dealership service center and mopar problem to me. It could be many things: piston rings, valve stem seals, pcv valves or god knows what else. Just have them diagnose and get it documented so that it’s covered for some time to come.

If this were me I’d do what’s easily accessible first to eliminate possible reasons. I’d want to do a visual of the intake tube and follow it up to the throttle body (TB), then take the TB off and shine a light inside the upper intake to see how bad the oil residue looks in there (from the PCV).

Inspect the air filter as suggested earlier but then take notice of any oil residue entering the “fresh air IN” port which is just after the air filter. The engine draws “in” fresh air to the crankcase if it needs it but this is also where oil exits (out) the in tube. There’s no valve here as you follow that tube which goes back to the rear drivers side of the top corner of the engine, just below the valve cover. Why it blows “out” the fresh air in tube is a mystery to me. From what I’ve monitored with mine and others, the amount of oil entering the intake tube here is minimal but does pool in the pleats that connect the air box. If there is significant oil poolage here, I’d be concerned and be wondering why but would suspect the PCV (which is not however connected the fresh air in tube)

Moving on, take off the TB (4 corner screws) clean it with throttle body cleaner and a small paint brush and inspect inside the upper intake. I can guarantee it’ll be an oily mess in there. This oil is from the PCV valve and a new one won’t fix that problem, but I’d replace the PCV anyway if you haven’t. (There’s no screws or bolts holding the PCV in place, passenger side, upper engine top corner just below the valve cover).

You may want to consider installing an oil catch can to capture the oil from the PCV heading to the upper intake manifold which then runs down to the cylinders to burn which will foul spark plugs and oxygen sensors.

Again, this is just me, I’d also consider taking off the upper intake to brake clean all the crap out, pull the spark plugs next to see what they look like… Maybe here is where you see if a plug or two are super wet which may explain the puff of oil you see. This can suggest an issue with rings. Maybe a compression test should be done …

This is all process of elimination to find your answer.

Now then, your biggest hurdle will be dealing with the dealership who then discusses your oil puff/consumption with the FCA engineers and how serious is this. I can tell you as fact, Chrysler WILL NOT deem anything less than 1.5L oil burn/1000 kms a problem. So, in Canada (and the same in the US) if my truck “burns” 15L of oil in 10k kms, that is just fine for Chrysler. Now, if it’s “leaking” on the ground, that’s another issue entirely. Good luck bud.

Maximus - great suggestions, I'll check the intake through the throttle body replace the PCV value as a precaution followed with pulling all the spark plugs to see if any are wet or with oil burn.

Following up on this to see if you had any updates?

Ironically enough I remote started my '23 today (almost 17,000 miles) and a nice blow of blue smoke came out the tailpipe as I was walking up (it had been sitting for ~3 hours), drove and checked again 1.5 hours later - no smoke.

OP hasn’t been on here since February, probably won’t get an update.
