Can the tail gate open without lifting the glass. I've heard that the lock and latch mechanisms freezing and I'm wondering if they makes access to the bed impossible.

Yes, it can open, but if it is setup right the rubber gasket will take a little abuse, my locks have not frozen yet, been single digit temps. but not below zero yet. I did lube them with light oil late summer to improve the operation....Jack

Tailgate will open without lifting the door. Getting it to close without lifting the door is not always easy. The top of the tailgate is a split level that is higher on the outside. If the cap is installed correctly, the gasket on the bottom of the door drops into the lower section and makes a nice seal.

I have not had any issues with the latches or locks. I did get a tube of graphite lube and squirted some into all of the locks. We don't get wet and freezing weather here, so I can't say on that.

I agree with others here yes it's possible to lower and raise the tail gate while the smart cap is closed and the tailgate is unlocked. The temperature was at least -2 below last night & it had snowed with about 12 inches of snow and the tailgate froze to the rubber gasket on the cap and I was able to break it free to get it open. The locks on the smart cap opened up and relocked without issue, nothing was froze. I just had it installed a month or two ago so it's new.

I spoke with a gentleman at RSI about this. He said that you just need to set the rack up so the rear is a bit higher. So the gate just barely kisses the rubber gaskets.

I have had to shim the rear and center mounting points, but it works great now. I drove through rain yesterday and no leaks. Though I suspect I am more susceptible to leaks in a car wash.

Followed the instruction and never had an issue. I can open and close the glass or the tailgate by itself.

It hardly gets cold enough to freeze where I am.
