2021 Gladiator Sport S. First of all, I hate the auto stop/start. Not that I am complaining but my gladiator stop/start rarely works. I bet it hasn't stopped the engine at a red light/stop sign in months. I try pushing down harder on the brake pedal to see if I can get it to work. I wonder if this is a problem in the computer and if so if this a sign of trouble down the road. Enjoy it not working but......

2020 JTR - I disabled mine and disconnected the aux battery after it kept draining my main battery - Unnecessary complication I don't want leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Does the cluster menu item for Start/Stop tell you the condition that's preventing it from engaging? That's the first place to look rather than guessing.

I don’t believe it works if the AC is on. Someone please correct me if wrong..

Could that be what is happening?

You're right. You can actually see the message on the dash if you scroll up to the ESS menu. It says something like ESS not ready, Air Conditioning on.

Stop/Start does work with the AC on. I believe the parameters have to fall within temperature limits, 80 degrees and below, 40 degrees and above. The engine needs to be at temperature and the batteries have to have sufficient charge levels. There is a list of other conditions that have to be met too.

Oh, so....my 2021 wrangler had a similar problem. I don't remember if it ALWAYS said it, but I did get the message in the ESS menu that ESS wasn't available - battery charging.
Turned out my secondary battery died, which in turn was killing my main battery.
Had both replaced under warranty. Don't remember how many miles I was at when it happened though.

I was in the same boat, not caring if ESS wasn't working because I too hate it and this felt like a free ESS delete lol but I decided that if something was wrong I should get it fixed while it was still under warranty

  • Driver’s seat belt is not buckled.
  • Driver’s door is not closed.
  • Battery temperature is too warm or cold.
  • Battery charge is low.
  • The vehicle is on a steep grade.
  • Cabin heating or cooling is in process and an acceptable cabin temperature has not been achieved.
  • Gear selector in MANUAL (M) mode.
  • HVAC is set to full defrost mode at a high blower speed.
  • HVAC set to MAX A/C.
  • Engine has not reached normal operating temperature.
  • Engine temperature too high.
  • The transmission is not in a forward gear.
  • Hood is open.
  • Transfer case is in 4WD Low or N (Neutral).
  • Brake pedal is not pressed with sufficient pressure.
  • Accelerator pedal input.
  • Vehicle speed threshold not achieved from previous Autostop.
  • Steering angle beyond threshold (ESS Models Only).
  • ACC is on and speed is set.
  • Vehicle is at high altitude.
  • System fault present.
It may be possible for the vehicle to be driven several times without the Stop/Start system going into a STOP/START READY state under more extreme conditions of the items listed above.

If you are worried, take it to the dealership and have it checked out under warranty.

Although the vehicle is "new to me" I have never had the ESS even try and start/stop the vehicle. Never gets past the message telling me the heating/cooling system is on and it's not gonna work. Don't miss it for a minute and if it ever did start working I would become one of the dedicated followers of the "push button off after starting" method. ESS is such a bad idea.

I think it depends. I've seen mine stop with the AC running and then it will start back up before the light even changes.

I too, try to remember to push the off button for that feature when I start it up...

Is your truck a stick shift? There are even more parameters for ESS to work on a manual.

I simply did the electronic defeat where an electronic plug in remembers my last selection, which is off. It was an easy plug in on my Sport S.

I simply cannot think that ESS on-off-on-off is good for the equipment, starter, snd multiple shifting of electric loads to the Aux Batt. Good for CAFE rating, probably gonna cost us maintenance in the end, and failures on the road. I don't want to see a failure on the top of Elephant Hill and no start.

Then I removed the Aux Batt. Listening here on the Forum there sure are a lot of Aux Batt failures.

Yep. It only works on manual transmission when it is in neutral with the clutch out.
