So i tow my 5000lb (Loaded) camper and was wondering what cooling features the Mojave has without the tow package. I bought it off the lot and it didn't have the tow package so i added the mopar hitch. It is an automatic. I have tried looking on here to see whether it has the larger cooling fan or not but I have seen conflicting info. I looked at the list of equipment and it does have the 220 watt alternator but didnt see anything about the larger cooling fan. The reason I am curious is because I was towing it home and it was almost 90 degrees outside and the coolant temp got up to 248 on a very large hill. Thanks everyone.

It will give you your full build sheet. My rubicon with the tow package has "HEAVY DUTY ENGINE COOLING" as a line item. I'd check for that. Further, i believe the larger cooling fan models have the 240amp alternator.

It may be worth looking into a Z Auto Tazer. it has a mode to enable the cooling fans. I used it yesterday in ~75-degree temps and my coolant dropped from 215-220 to 185 in a few minutes.

That is super helpful. It says standard engine cooling. Desert rated? You would think it should have the heavy duty engine cooling. Well I think I will look in to upgrading to the heavy duty fan.

Respectfully, I don’t think the “desert rating” badges are being tested with or are accounting for 5,000lbs being trailered. Similarly, I doubt that the Rubicon capabilities and subsequent badging are earned while hauling trailers, either.

"Desert Rated" means next to nothing in this context. It's an advertising thing. It doesn't actually relate to any set of standards, just what Jeep determined to be important in the design. So don't hang your hat on that.

If someone says "Mine's Desert Rated, yours isn't", the question that can't be answered is "how would one test for that?". Unlike something like the towing rating which has actual test standards to run against.

Oh I agree with you about that. However you would think if you build a vehicle that is desert rated you would include a heavy duty cooling fan.

In that regard Desert Rated is no different from Trail Rated. BUT considering the Mojave is the only trim without a diesel option, and the diesel is generally regarded as having more heat dissipation issues than the gasser, it would not be unreasonable to assume Jeep did consider engine heat in their Desert Rating.

Why they didn't go the step further and give the desert rated model the bigger fan? I'm assuming so they could get guys like me to pay for it. Mine is a manual and was never going to tow much anyway. I wanted a hitch receiver for a bike rack. I could have done that a lot cheaper myself, but i wanted the big cooling fan too so i opted for the towing package.

I pulled the front grill off and noticed that I had a lot of mud caked in to the radiator so Im sure that didnt help the cause. I cleaned it all out in hopes that it will make a difference. While towing on normal highways and hills the temp would range from 218-235 and only twice did it go above 240.

Yes, larger alternator to handle the larger draw of the larger electric fan.
2020 likely also had a different high current fuse due to the fan draw.

235-240 is high. I'd be concerned if mine got that hot towing 5,000 pounds. I never see those temps and should not.

Picking nits - but for the OP - it's amps on the alternator, not watts. Might help knowing if you ever try to swap parts.
180 amps is base, 220, then 240 amps for the tow package (and max tow)

Pay attention to OIL temperature and transmission temperatures! With coolant that hot, I'd wonder about oil and transmission.

Update: I did go ahead and order the 850 watt fan for my gladiator however I am still waiting for it to come in. I towed my camper yesterday through very hilly areas of 81 and had zero issues with cooling. I do think that cleaning out the radiator made a huge difference. This is the warmest everything fit during the biggest hill on the highway.

For a 58 degree day - maybe you had no sirens or smoke or alerts on the dash, but IMO, that's the upper end of oil temp, and I'd even suggest I'd not want to see coolant temperatures any higher than that.
The oil is pushing the envelope with coolant right on its tail, IMO.
It should never run that hot in 50 degree weather. When it hits 80 degrees, you may be in trouble.

I’m curious because on a normal day just driving around town my temp is anywhere between 195 and 215. And that’s not towing anything. What is the upper end of the spectrum with oil and coolant temp?
