mine was a 2008 JKU Rubicon. The JK had a 3.8l V6 from ‘07-‘11. It had 200hp and 235 lb ft. It wasn’t enough for the heavy ass JKU, even with the 6 speed and 4.10s. Not even on the stock 32s.

I lived in CO ‘09-‘13. My Gladiator is a ‘20 Overland.

I had forgotten about that v6. Thanks. Right after my buddy bought his ‘06 with the 4l I’m almost sure. He still has it and I hope he doesn’t ever sell it. Trying to get him to bring it out here sometime.

It wasn’t a bad engine. The JKU was just a lot heavier than the TJs. It got a bad rap replacing the 4.0l because people seemed to forget about power to weight ratio.

I skip gears all the time with my auto. I just put it in manual shift mode. I often run 4L in third and 4th gear on the 8 speed. You also get 4L speed control with the auto, and increments are controlled by the manual shift up down. Quite nice for long steep descents. First increment is 0.6mph.
That's selec speed control in 4lo.

I got the High Altitude, very comfortable ride, I never expected to do a lot of crazy wheeling, but is perfect for my needs in the eastern edge of the Mojave(Gold Butte) area. My adult kids fit fine in the back seat. No cover on the bed as I use it as a truck a lot.

Nothing, I mean nothing beats this 8 speed automatic when it comes to off roading.

Whatever you want...I can supervise!
I'd agree on the lockers....... but then those have been argued both ways as far as being needed or not needed. Even some of the "hard core" folks say "naw".
Sway bar disconnects - do you want to do it from the comfort of the cab by pushing a button, or add quick disconnects for a few bucks and skip the electronics? Again, there's a choice. Simple and cheap or push a button from the cab and hope that disconnect holds up LOL
So even there one must weigh how really important it is to have the electric disconnect vs. a couple minutes manually, and if they feel lockers are necessary for their needs. People need to go in with eyes open and what their plans for that truck really are. Too few buy for the moment.

Here ya go - the one and only difference is the word "wide". Window sticker, build sheet, whatever - they are all heavy-duty. The difference is wide. I have other snippets in the house I can't access from my shop here......

And a Sport not max tow not wide axles with 3.73 ratio (so pretty obviously not a max tow) showing heavy duty -

So, I am about to order my JT....I will be using it for overlanding...not rock crawling, nor desert racing. I like diesel engines; durability, gas mileage, torque,...but, have concerns because of the comments posted in this forum...and weight of the gas vs. diesel engines. Intend to overland in US and Canada, primarily. What is your recommendation?

Research and choose for yourself. Biggest issue with diesel is reduced payload.

Overlanding with a trailer? If so, I’d choose a max tow bare minimum. Other than that, it depends what type of land you intend to “go over”.

I am also thinking about going manual. Do you guys have manuals? How is it?
The thing that irritated me the most about the manual is the pedal placement. there is no room to rest your foot along side the clutch peddle like a normal truck. I've adapted by pushing the seat back further and i can place my foot under the pedal when not shifting, but when going through the gears my left foot is hovering in the air until I get into the gear i need. We ordered it because no one near by had a manual transmission on the lot, so this was an unpleasant surprise. The gear ratios are wide, first is almost a granny gear and fifth and sixth are overdrives. It took some getting use to, since my car is a GTI and her's was a Beetle Turbo Convertable, both with close ratio six speeds. I think the 4.10 gears would be better, as the sweet spot where you don't have to down shift on a hill is around 80 mph. We test drove an automatic and for an automatic it wasn't too bad, but we like to shift it our selfs.

I have the manual and went with 5.13 gears and a Centerforce clutch and love it! The heavier flywheel and gripper clutch, coupled with deeper gears really changes this into a proper truck, on and off road.
