Not too shabby

A couple of weeks ago I went from S.E. PA to Raleigh, NC and back and averaged 26.2 MPG (calculated fill to fill) in my stone stock '20 Overland (ordered 5/19, built 6/19, delivered 7/19).

What’s work?
I went from northern Nevada to Eagle mountain Utah, pulling 7x14 aluminum trailer @ 725 empty, hauled back 300 pound ATV for one of my chitlens. Fought a god awful headwind back to Nevada and averaged 15.6MPG. 50% stuck in 6th gear. Without the wind it would have held a solid 7th and I gots the 3.73s. Pulled Pequop summit in 5th held at 55mph. Fun experiment only because my 5.9L ZJ is down for a much needed plenum gasket so it was the truck or nothing. 4.10s would made a massive difference.

Changes to tires matter - I lost a couple of MPG when I went from the stock tires to the slightly wider A/T tires. The dealer said "these will lose you some gas mileage". I said - I know - but I want something better in snow.
So I gave up a couple of MPG to get better winter performance.

The smaller, lighter tires of the Sport and Overland are one reason for the mpg they get - less weight, less rolling resistance and so on, including better braking.

I thought only the Toyota people called their brick a toaster.

Sort of funny, generally speaking -Jeep people drive bricks and Toyota people drive toasters.

When conditions change it seems that the displayed average changes way too quickly for it to be a full trip average. More like a "recent-ish" average.

Not in my phone app comparisons.
The displayed average seems to always match normally within a half mpg.
If it was "recentish" then it would not matched much at all.
What is based on recent or current is the remaining range.
That fluctuates with current conditions vs. history vs. fuel remaining.

If it says 24.2 mpg, for example, my phone app would probably show somewhere in the range of 23.8 to 24.5
It keeps adjusting the average, yes, just like you would if you track the average of anything else.

Brick, toaster, barn on wheels all applicable when describing aerodynamics of both vehicles I guess lol

Years back when I owned a Jeep Patriot my wife “a complete non car person” called it a toaster because it was silver and the grille slots resembled one… stuck with all my jeeps since.
