So decided to change the rear differential fluid after 500 miles and a gear swap and thought there was a drain plug. Not a big deal as I was planning to pop the cover anyway to have a look, but a drain plug sure would have made a less messy job. My Jeep is a 2022 Mojave, is my Jeep unique?

None of the previous Dana axles in Jeeps had drain plugs for a reason. They added them on the JL axles in 2018 and soon figured out it is a terrible idea for a vehicle that goes off road. Drag it on a rock and it's either leaking, cracked, or damaged to the point it's nearly impossible to remove. That's why they got rid of it. It's unnecessary and a major weak point on an axle that may encounter an obstacle. Good riddance.

Sorry no reason for it to be a weak point and if it’s recessed like the fill plug nothing to get hung up on. Bet you my paycheck it was removed to cut cost, lot of extra machining to have one for a fluid that is not regularly changed.

The drain plug is on the side and is flush against the reinforced casting of the drain port. It likely does not weaken the axle housing in any way judging by the looks of it. Where the plug is located, it would be hard to hit it with a rock in a way that would deform it enough to keep it from coming out. There are much more at risk components under a gladiator than a diff drain plug.

The rear was decently located, the fronts were the real problem. The service interval is long enough that every fluid change should include a visual inspection of the gears. Therefore it's simply an unnecessary part and a threaded boss has got to be weaker than a solid casting, even if it's marginal.

Yea, the front drain is at 6 o'clock, an easy spot to damage. I just changed both diffs fluid at 40k miles and drains were nice to have. I will probably change it again much sooner just because it's so quick and easy to do. I will probably never put my jt through anything that will come close to testing those castings but Iam sure there's someone out there has or will. Definitely a place for a stress crack.

JKs all had drain plugs on the lower sides of diffs and IIRC the earliest JLs & JTs had them. Probably deleted for cost saving reasons. Apparently they now have a reusable cover gasket. Adds someone to a fluid change.

I love easy drain and fills, so I'm going to miss not have a drain plug. Mine is a 2023, so I assume that I don't have the drain plug either. I'd be tempted to buy a rear differential cover that had one.

You have to add an ARB diff cover that has a drain and fill plug in it

My ARB covers have drain plugs and I will use them when I change the oil but I will still remove the cover for inspection.

I drilled and tapped my CavFab covers 1/8 NPT for drain plugs.
