That’s unbelievable! I’m a firm believer that after a certain age, you should take your road test again.
Yeah, but that doesn't stop anyone from driving without a license or insurance.

Yeah, but that doesn't stop anyone from driving without a license or insurance.
A couple of years ago, WHO TV had a crew outside of the Polk County courthouse, and a reporter inside watching as people had their licenses suspended or revoked. The reporter inside would relay what happened to the camera person and reporter outside. As the "defendant" came out they'd watch and film what happened - usually they went over and got into their cars again and the WHO team would try to ask them about getting home after just losing their license. Every one of them got back in their cars and drove off. You can bet your sweet Aunt Bippy there's a fair percentage of drivers out there with no license, and even more with no insurance. It's only illegal if you get caught, according to them.

And if they get caught, what's the penalty? Basically nothing.

In 2010 my wife and I were in a collision. 35mph 4-lane (2 each way) road with a curbed median with bushes and trees.

Driver in front of me stopped suddenly, without warning. At first I was, "why are they slowing down?" because there was no one in front of them, no animal running across the road, no kid on a bike nearby. I slammed on my brakes, we stopped a foot or two from the car. The Dodge Charger behind me wasn't paying attention and hit us a good second after we stopped.

When the cops finally arrived and we got all the stories out and information swapped, we experienced how f**ked up our DMV/DOL/LEO system is.

1. Driver who caused this was used to driving a manual, not an auto, and "accidentally" shifted, and "put the car in Park". No reverse lights came on, and the brake lights were lit.

2. It wasn't the driver's car; someone else was the registered owner from a city over 30 miles from where the driver lived.

3. Neither the driver nor the registered vehicle owner had valid insurance.

4. From the police report, neither the driver who caused this, nor the owner of the vehicle, were issued a citation.

So yeah, I'm in favor of stricter licensing and punishment.

It gets stupider - shortly after my brother bought my Javelin back in the 70s, after he had it all painted up cool and all, he was on the main street going through our home town waiting to make a left turn. Signals on, foot on brake, when WHAM. He was hit hard. Cops come take info, make their notes, my brother limped the car the 3 blocks to home and the cops found the guy that hit him did so because his brakes failed. So they called a wrecker and towed that car away........... right?
Wrong! They sent the guy driving off in that car.
The Des Moines police are told to turn the other way if there's an accident and a certain group has no insurance or iffy license. Be creative in writing up the report. And I got that first hand from a local wrecker driver, confirmed by a neighbor who was in an accident - and watched it happen.
It's a sad state of affairs as far as traffic, driving, insurance, licensing..........

I think people subconsciously put more distance between you when they see you have something metal sticking out of the back of your vehicle.
I need to do this...

That sucks!

I am actually in the middle of shopping for dash cams with a rear facing cam option because of this issue.

Even with "hands-free" device laws on the books that most people ignore anyways, just see too many people with their heads up their digital asses looking at a phone or doing other distracted driving.
Thinkware has some pretty good camera bundles that come with hardwire kits and rear-facing cameras. My wife and I both use them.

Come to Florida! its a shit show around here!!!!

395K people moved here in 2020-2021, and they all drive like they own the state!
Here's how to drive in Florida:
  1. Only use your turn signal in a parking lot to let other drivers know that you're claiming the spot of the person who is backing out. Never use them in traffic when it would be convenient or safe to communicate with other drivers that you're changing lanes or turning.
  2. Use your hazards to park wherever the fuck you want. Fire lane? No problem - hazards! Don't want to push the grocery cart to your car? Fuck it - pull up to the front door with your hazards on!
  3. Also use your hazards to let other drivers know it's raining. The fact that we have rain drops on our own windshields isn't enough.
  4. Make sure you use your high beams in the city only, and especially while the sun is still out. The sun is so bright that it's hard to see other cars, so you have to make sure your headlights are brighter than the sun so other drivers are aware of your presence.
  5. Also make sure to flash your high beams at someone in front of you if you plan on passing them. Never use your turn signal to pass. That shit's for children.
  6. High beams are also not technically high beams - they're backup headlights. If one of your main headlights burns out, don't bother spending $5 on a new bulb and replacing it. Just use your high beams all the time. Frugality is more important than other drivers' visibility.
  7. If it's not raining heavily, but just kind of sprinkling, make sure you roll your windows down. The whole defrosting/defogging system is too confusing, so it's better to just get wet than to learn how to use your vehicle's climate control.
  8. Always drive at least 15mph over the speed limit, and tailgate other people who don't do the same. But then, when you get to a red light, whip out your phone and take as long as you'd like to start moving again when the light turns green. Remember: SPEED LIKE HELL, or cell phone. There is no in-between.
  9. Lastly, and most importantly, don't EVER get sucked into believing the myth that merge lanes and turn lanes are just for merging and turning. OH NO NO! If you see a line of idiots in the lane they need to be in, swing into the merge lane (with no turn signal, of course), floor it, and cut in front of someone at the last second. Odds are they're either a lost tourist who is going too slow, or a local who is on their phone anyway, so it's not like you'll even come close to causing an accident. No harm, no foul!
I think I need to talk to someone...

We need to meet, you can talk to me, do you like beer?? you see all the same things I do, your off on a couple,

10. Remember red light is cell phone time, everyone check in on Facebook and update that you have moved 2 blocks and check in at the new light!! and remember just cause its green you don't have to go wait..... 30, 45, 85 seconds before you move a 125 yards and finally get to 27mph, its OK nobody wants to go anywhere........

11. When your on a major highway/interstate,

1. when everyone else slows from posted speed limit to stopped, because 1 tourist touched his brake pedal 4 miles ahead, remember drive 25-35 miles per hour, for the next 7 to 10 miles till you realize that wow, I'm actually driving a car and maybe I should get moving!!!!!!! you simple fuck!

2. if traffic is moving on the roads that run north to south 75/95, if four lanes of traffic are moving pretty good, say 75 to 85 miles per hour, do you have a out of state tag??? You, yes, you! have the privilege to run 20-30 miles per hour faster than the flow of traffic cutting people off running upon inches of the back bumper, passing in the grass, passing in the brake down lane, anything to get ahead of the car that's already speeding!!! and remember, people, when you lose control of your car, on a straight road, from either falling asleep at the wheel, or texting and driving, drunk, looking at FB or IG, please show that you have excellent driving skills by jerking the wheel left or right whichever is best, and stomp that fucking brake pedal as hard as you can, bend it, put it through the floor board, cause you'll stop and be safe, as soon as you bounce off every guard rail for the next 200 yards,

simple rants from one who has been driving in this state for to many years, sigh!!!

Using them to merge in traffic is a good way to ensure you get cut off... if you must (due to personal conviction) use them to merge, only activate them AFTER you cross the line into the next lane...

I laugh - but mostly because there's some truth to that first part, especially around here. Driving to your destination is a competition. Losing is not an option.

While I don't agree with not using turn signals and cutting people off, most people have no clue how to correctly use a merge lane. If the merge lane is empty before the actual merge point, then it isn't being used properly. If the merge lane is moving faster than the rest of traffic, get on over there and use it properly.

Here is one of many articles you can find about it: https://www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/zi...-courtesy-rules-state-laws-heavy-traffic.html
