Rear facing car seat?

Hi all! Wife and I are expecting or first in about 4 weeks. I just installed the infant rear facing seat the other day and it leaves almost no room for the passenger (questionable safety because of proximity to the dash) and leaves an unsafe amount of room on the drivers side. Can you share what rear facing seats you are using/have used and how much room they leave? I assume this will only get worse/bigger until he is old enough to flip the seat around. Was not expecting this to be such a big issue but it is. Thanks for your help.

I have the Nuna Pipa in mine behind the driver seat. I have plenty of room for me (5’10”) with the steering wheel adjusted all the way towards the dash. Been almost a year with the setup. Not gonna lie I’m looking forward to the transition to forward facing in the coming months, but it’s a good solution for when we aren’t using our SUV

I also went with the Nuna - put the car seat in the middle and only had to move both front seats up one click.

You can put them in the middle. Secured properly, there should be no issues.

Hopefully, you got a click in that goes from the truck to the stroller. You can get an extra base to put in each vehicle.

We used the Recaro seat that goes from infant to kid, but not a removable base one.

Put it in the middle between the seats.

Thanks for the replies and the congratulations. I was under the impression that you could not do the middle seat in the gladiator. Do you hook into one of the brackets from each outside seat or use the seatbelt?

We didn't buy our JLUR until the kids were in booster seats........just wasn't ideal for us

Now the kids don't need anything 9 & 12.......so much easier and extra room now

If I'm remembering correctly from the manual, you'll need to use the "Latch system" for the middle seat.

Quite the opposite. Newborns need to lean a lot more than infants. It gets better as they transition either into the next sized seat, or you're able to angle the seat up more. For example: my son's seat has a ball style level check, and there is a large safe area for over 6mo, and a very small safe area for under 6mo which forces the seat leaned a lot more.

Also, for a newborn you're probably using a style that utilizes a drop in infant carrier, and those ones are the bulkiest of all. Once the infant carrier is no longer useful on its own you'll probably want to transition to a one piece car seat because they are both more compact and safer for the baby.

My son recently switched to forward facing and he fit fine just prior to that.

FYI---many local police, fire and EMS departments will help you mount the seats safely in any vehicles.

this. used the graco infant car seat, that goes to a booster with back, and then a booster. graco 4ever or something. (after my accident, i replaced it with a graco front facing booster only so i dont remember what i had in there exactly) that infant base to click and unclick, taking the entire car seat out and putting it on the stroller or whatever, so much easier. SO MUCH EASIER!

i used the middle for long trips and passenger side any other time. I really missed my GX when i swapped the car seats. I couldnt put it behind the driver due to interference with my comfort and ability to be safe. Im only 6'0 but i have to put the seat all the way back.

Once they go booster, alot of the problems with space get resolved, from my experience anyway.

My kid is also super tall for her age as well as through her entire life. for example she is 4, will be 5 in October, she is 43-44 inches tall and 53lbs. lmao

police stations are not trained for car seats, fire stations only. at least in GA and SC only tell you to go to fire stations.

I'm from a much simpler time---we just used a laundry basket on the rear floor!
