So I just picked up an overland JT with the limited slip in the rear. The dealer installed a lift, 37's and sold it as a certified pre-owned. After having it for a couple of weeks I decided the 3.73's needed to be upgraded to push the 37's. I dropped it off at a local shop to regear and got a call a few hours later to inform me the factory limited slip is toasted! Not going to lie I was a bit worried about it since my JLU (I have since sold the JLU) limited slip ate itself @less than 8000 miles. So my question is should I have them put it back together and go back to the dealer? They said since it was still under the certified warranty it would be covered (providing they agree it is damaged upon their inspection). My other options are to install an E locker, or maybe a truetrac limited slip (I think they finally came out). So in my experience and talking to the shop that was going to do the work it seems common for these to fail. When I picked up my JLU the guy mech that did the work on it said "make sure you come back before the warranty is up!" I'm wondering if they have updated the part or if it's still a problem? Also I'm torn between going back with a limited slip or e locker. I'm in Cali for a 4 more years so I will be exploring trails and playing in the snow, but I'm not sure where I will live next and if there will be the as challenging trails around there that need a rear locker. Oh also along with the regear I'm having a front locker installed. I was hoping to run that and the factory limited slip together, but if I'm getting away from factory maybe an e locker would be awesome? Gotta decide in the morning when the shop can price out my options.

I’m not a fan of lockers unless you can turn em on and off, so that should give you my opinion ??

Meanwhile I like a limited slip for its always there assistance in dry, rain, and snow. I would choose the geared version. And for offroad you still have the brake assist action, which the limited slip helps.

I'm no expert by any means but I do have an lsd in the rear of my 21 willys. I have wheeled it plenty and have 36000 miles on it. I've had 0 issues with it and it has performed flawlessly. I don't know of any known reliability issues with these lsd's and I'm pretty sure they are the screw type. So all that being said, I am swapping rubicon axles into my JT this weekend. I made this decision based on the fact I wanted lockers and I found a deal on some built Rubicon take offs that are already regarded to 5.13. If you can get the lsd replaced under warranty, at least get it. If you're still getting lockers you can sell the new lsd and get some of your $ back. My wife has an Overland with open diff in the rear. I will be installing the removed Willys lsd in her Overland. It will cost more to install lockers in your Overland though since all the wiring and switches will need to be installed. I bought these on Amazon and they are the only way I would recommend going for a clean installation.

Can’t say that I’ve read about this being a big issue. I’m curious if the dealer will cover it under warranty if an independent shop has had it apart, unless you’re saying that they just removed the diff cover(s).

It sounds like you’re indifferent. Unless you really want to go to the added expense, I’d take it to the dealer.

What are you looking to re-gear too? Mopar has a 4.88 kit. If that would do it, maybe they could install those for you when they put it back together.

I didn't do a whole lot of searching on the gladiator forum between last night and this morning, but that's the link to the JL's having issues. I'm pretty sure we have the same LSD. I was planning on eventually swapping something else in the rear to get away from the clutch style LSD I just hadn't put much thought into it yet.

e-locker or air locker. Buy once, cry once; and I suspect the parts are not that much difference in price.

I'd think hard about a front locker while he's got it apart too.

Then take the bill to the dealer and beat them up for a credit of the amount a new LSD would have cost them.

Front locker is a for sure it was alreadygoing to be part of the regear. I'm just debating rear LSD or locker at this point. If i was staying out here in Cali for longer I would jump on the rear locker in a heartbeat. I just don't know if it would really be needed anywhere else. I've always had an LSD anywhere else I've been and done just fine. Out here is the only place I've gotten to play in the rocks and such. I highly doubt the dealer will reimburse me for anything if they don't do the work themselves.

Talked with the shop and since the clutches in the stock LSD are trashed I'm going to go with the truetrac in the rear and elocker in the front. I think it will fit my needs pretty good and I liked the price a lot more than if I did e-lockers front and rear. Yes I know buy once cry once but I'm already crying!! I've also read good things about the truetrac. Once it's all in and I get a chance to go play in the snow and such I'll let everyone know if I made a good decision or if I will be crying again in the future. ?

Good choice , I’m so excited the TrueTrac is available now. Being able to spin two tires in 2wd is important. ?
