So I went back to the dealer today to confirm there was no TSB for the 3rd gen EcoDiesel and that the T6 they put in my Jeep was incorrect. Using the list posted of approved oil, we found a brand that met the 12991 requirement and they did a complete oil/filter change. I'm satisfied with the outcome.
So they put unapproved oil in your truck. I really wonder if T6 will cause issues long term. That oil is basically the holy grail of engine oil

I'm wondering the same thing. I've used many of the top oils in several Powerstrokes over the years. My latest I use Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel 5w40. What exactly is in the factory oil the the top Diesel oils don't have? I'm thinking it's BS myself. Someone speak up and prove me wrong or explain please

There are a few posts here answering this. Our emissions require a low ash oil which Rotella doesn’t seems to meet.

At home I am not as anal but if I'm taking it to the dealer, they're gonna use the right oil spec (12991) even if it's free. Rotella doesn't meet this due to the low ash requirement and with how sensitive our emissions shit is, I don't want to mess around.

Yeah the Gen 2 had a TSB that said switch from Pennzoil 5W30 to Rotella T6 5W40 because they were eating bearings on the thin gasoline engine oil.

There is no switch for Gen 3. Been MS-12991 5W40 oils from the start.

Some still believe Rotella would actually be better. I do know the Motul X-Clean 5W40 is 0.8% SAPS and that's your best bet.

What are other dpf w def systems using. I understand low ash, to prevent premature loading of the dpf. But this little diesel aint any different from a modern Cummins or Powerstroke engine. They have the same emissions. So whats up, why can i use the oil they use.
Im sorry i just am not a fan of Quaker State or Pennzoil. I want a good synth and keep the engine alive for many miles. Getting rid of the engine killing egr would be the real deal, but anyway...

Actually, thinkin about it, it may be to prevent ash load of the egr side, and the related intake and valves. Whoever designed this shit needs an ass beating

Apparently there's a 0W40 version of the T6 that is low SAPS and honestly would work great in these engines, although it doesn't meet spec and it's virtually impossible to find at retailers. But I'd wager than the low SAPS 0W40 Rotella T6 would be the perfect oil for these VM diesels in practicality.
