Hey Yall!

Quick question.

I have a Sport with stock suspension, and a friend offered me brand new JTR shocks for $300, can I just bolt them on? Or will the stock springs and suspension geometry mess everything up?

Are they fox or red bodied shocks? Almost everyone here will tell you to steer clear of the fox shocks, they’re extremely under dampened.
Red body? Good to go, but $300 seems steep in my opinion takeoffs.

I also believe you should be good to throw them on without major issues, they probably have a longer stroke than sport s, but shouldnt cause major issues.

im sure someone else will chime in with more experience than me on adding take offs to sport/s/overlands.

For price reference. Here’s spring’s and shocks for $350.

again, fox bodies aren’t the best, and there’s a reason this hasn’t sold yet (little high in my opinion)

Thanks! From the picture he showed me they looked like red bodies, I’ll check with him.

Got it, they switched away from fox to the red bodies in 23. If memory serves me, the red bodies are made by Tenenco, which are the OE manufacturer of rancho I think.

FWIW, the red body shocks are the same ones that come on the WILLYS and are not valved any different for the Rubicon. They are better than the earlier Fox branded ones that @ATL_Rubi mentioned, but if your are keeping your Sport stock otherwise, I think it would be minimal to a wash of any improvements to the stock Sport shocks you have. Also, $300 is a bit spendy. Can catch the same shocks on Ebay for $200 or less and even sub $150 on the sales boards and Craigslist if on the lookout.

If you are looking for stiffer shocks but staying OEM on the springs with no further lift or under/at 1.5"-2.0" of lift, Bilstein 5100's or Eibach monotube shocks would be what I recommend but you are paying in $450 range for a set.

And several other brands. More than likely they are Monroe's.

I will sell you my whole ruby suspension, springs and shocks for $150, very low miles, here in Tucson.
They are for the diesel but should work just fine.

Allegedly they’re valved poorly and that causes some softness where there shouldn’t be. I test drove a 22 a bit back and remember that it felt like any other truck, bouncy, but having the 23 with the red bodies it’s a night and day difference.

If you do not have another point of reference, you can easily overlook how under dampened they are.

When I had my 2020 Rubicon and it being my first experience with the JT, I though the Fox branded shocks were OK until I got my 2021 WILLYS and had another point of reference.

Fox built them to Jeeps spec, but it did the brand no favors.

Anyone have any thoughts on Diesel suspension on gas JT? I swear I heard it’s not a good idea somewhere.

Should be fine. The weirdness is that Jeep uses a pissload of different springs (i.e.: not all Rubicons have the exact same springs at all four corners). That said, any set of Rubicon springs should raise your Sport at least 3/4" but probably no more than 1.25".

Gas Rubicon springs/shocks raised my Sport 3/4", so a diesel set ought to give a bit more.

And I agree with others that $300 for just takeoff shocks is a poor buy. I bought my takeoff springs/shocks set for $200.
