So you think towing a 4900lb trailer with no trailer brakes with a mid size pickup that weighs roughly the same is a good idea?

Okay, great. Let me know next time so I can steer clear of you at all times. Your jeeps brakes are designed to stop one jeep, not two.
It's not too late to delete this and not let anyone new know you tried this and think just because it's within the tow rating you can do it safely. Most states require trailer brakes once the load is over 3000lbs
Hey everyone, don't stick bamboo shoots up your fingernails!

It's not "just" dumb, is incredibly dangerous and probably against the law in your state.
Wow you must be just great at parties and outings. Do you feel better about yourself now? Very Boomer of you ;-)

Lol, that's not Boomer you're smelling from that direction. We have too many fantastic older guys on this site to try to lump that in.

if I needed to though, what’s the largest bamboo shoot I could fit under stock fingernails?

That would be wanton and willful negligence and your health insurance would deny any medical care claim.

Please read the post again. I said it was not a great idea. In fact, it was pretty dumb!
I posted it to specifically to let others know not to make the same dumb mistake!

Thanks for the preaching it is very constructive. I knew there would be someone.
Well.... Nobody reads the entire post anymore. A lot of people commenting on how dumb it was, but you did say that you needed to make changes before you would try it again. At least I read it. Reading is fundamental!?

We've all done it. That's how we learn. I made a mistake towing my camper once. Was in a bind and had no choice. Never made that mistake again.

Wow this thread went off track a little.
Yeah, more than a little. :(

As a tech writer for RV magazines I'm quite familiar with the towing requirements. The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of a motorhome, or any other tow vehicle, covers the weight of the tow vehicle as well as whatever it is towing. The GCWR does assume that the trailer, or towed vehicle, does have a supplementary braking system. Even my 54,000 lb tag axle coach with 6 wheel disk brakes isn't designed to stop in the proper distance when towing my Gladiator or Wrangler. On my JK Wranglers is installed the M&G Engineering supplemental braking system, which was perfect for that task.

But, as a practical kind of guy who, unlike some people, have actually made a few mistakes in my life  I have done some things that weren't quite to specifications. I did need to tow my 2012 Wrangler behind my 2002 Grand Cherokee once to drop it off at the dealership for repairs. It pulled it okay but stopping was an exercise in planning ahead - far ahead. It was short drive, about 3 miles on easy roads and sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I wouldn't consider doing it for a long distance or in traffic though.

So you think it's really necessary to tell someone posting why a bad idea is a bad idea needs to be told it's a bad idea? Are you from the department of redundancy department?

Hell I’m towing a 17 foot camper with the mopar brake modular. It sucks, why didn’t the gladiator get the 1500 cam to help towing. It feels like a damn parachute. Just getting onto the Hwy takes 5000 rpms.

It does better if you shift manually, each gear between 2,500 and 3,000 RPM. I have a 27'er and have had no issues merging onto the highway.

I towed my XJ from Savannah GA to Huntsville AL on a car dolly with my LJ so no rocks being thrown from this glass house.? The car dolly had surge brakes so "stopping" wasn't bad but parking on a grade was a not happening thing.. parking brake and in any gear on slope it would push or pull my LJ around. I did make sure the trip was during low to no traffic on road AKA only drunks, cops and nuts on road. :giggle: :like: I fit in the latter two categories. Oh my LJ is rated for up to 5000 lbs trailer and has trailer brake controller too.
