Should I be concerned about running my rig with the heat shield removed?
37” spare tire upgrade!

Following. I can fit my Yoko 37s with the heat shield in, but I’ve been thinking about modifying it for a bit more space.

I know this is an old thread. I just installed a Clayton Off-road rear track bar and moved my 37x13.5 spare from the bed of my truck to the stock location. In order to center the spare under the bed, I had to remove the heat shield. It has been suggested that wrapping the pipe with heat wrap might work. I have also considered cutting the pipe just after the rear axle. I've also seen videos where people have cut the tailpipe and relocated it just after the front resonator, eliminating the suitcase. Will I melt my spare tire if I don't do anything?

Take some pipe that is 2x the diameter of the exhaust pipe, split it down the middle and use it as weld on heat shield with some welded nuts as spacers. Exhaust wrap rusts and cracks pipes quickly.

That is my plan anyway.

I ended up not welding stuff and used some heat shield mounting hardware

You could always wrap the exhaust pipe in that area with heat wrap.
Be warned that exhaust wrap tends to hold moisture and salt. Doing a ceramic coating would be a better option for those not in Arizona - for a motorcycle exhaust you can do it in the home oven, but you might need a professional shop with a large enough furnace to do a section that big for the truck.

I removed my heat shield 48k miles ago and never looked back. I also do a 5 tire rotation so I’m under there quite often, and I run diesel which PROBABLY has higher egt than the gasser, and I’ve had zero issues.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye on it. I'm also going to include the spare in my tire rotations, so we'll see how it looks in a few months.

I removed the heat shield and cut the exhaust just above the axle for rock crawling clearance when I relocated the spare to the bed.
Now, I am moving the spare back to the stock location (wasn't necessary to relocate the spare, btw) and these replies have been helpful.
I have GOT to stop throwing away stuff that I remove in case I want to use it later. I hate clutter. lol

Same I ran no heat shield until I did and exhaust and had no issues with a 37" tire. Nothing to worry about.

Don't have the exhaust dump on the spare if you cut the exhaust short, the exhaust gases are very hot and can damage the tire if it's dumping on anything.

I still have everything I've removed from my Jeep except the stock wheels. Now, will I ever put that crap back on? No! I'm just a hoarder. I have the stock exhaust I removed from a 2016 Mustang GT with 15 miles on it. I haven't owned that vehicle in over 7 years. :)

In my garage I have parts from Harley's and SXS's I'll never own again. I had my old bumpers from my JT for about 2 years before I finally put them on the curb. I am trying to overcome my hoarding tendencies.
