I've had Starlink residential service for 3 years and it has been flawless. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to take advantage of the rare sale on Starlink's new Mini dish. I've lived about 30 miles outside of Moab for more than 50 years and, as many of you are aware, cell phone service (and internet) is simply not available in much of this area because of the rugged topography. I've carried inReach devices for many years.

I mounted the Starlink Mini dish in the Gladiator last week. It works great inside the cab and while driving. However, it hates wearing a tinfoil hat. When it was turned on for the first time, it refused to locate any satellites. Turns out the HotHeads headliners and Sound Assassin strips that I installed a few years ago have a layer of tinfoil-like material. Once I trimmed the rear passenger side HotHead, Starlink connected immediately.

My drive to town takes me down the winding Highway 128 deep in the narrow canyon of the Colorado River where there is absolutely no cell service. With Starlink, I've been able to maintain a cellular connection all the way to town, even in an area where SiriusXM radio always drops out. I've been able to walk at least 100 feet from the Jeep and maintain a solid wifi signal. Speeds have been at or over 100Mbps when stationary and about half that when driving.

I've attached a few photos of the installation. I still need to clean up the cable routing and the adhesive residue left from the HotHeads. The dish is connected to the keyed 120V outlet on the back of the center console via a 100-watt USB-C charger/adapter. The Jeep's USB-C outlets do not provide sufficient power to run the dish. When the Jeep is not running, the dish can be plugged into a 100-watt USB-C port on the Jackery.

The Mini is mounted to a conveniently empty hole in the sport bar with a C-size RAM Mount ball and arm. I initially mounted it with the smaller B-size RAM Mount gear. However, it would not stay in place on rough roads. The B-size mounts are only rated to hold 1 pound under heavy-duty use while the C-size mounts are rated at 3 pounds for heavy duty use. The C-size mount is extremely sturdy and has not moved at all since installed. I've also mounted a ball on the DV8 chase rack so the dish can easily be moved out of the cab if necessary.

This is very interesting and I don't have any metal foil in my roof panels. Hmm. What's the monthly service fee on that thing?

50 bucks per month if you do the ROAM plan. I think that is only available for the mini dish though.

I have the $50/month Roam plan. It includes 50Gb with overage billed at $1/Gb. There is also an unlimited plan. I think that is $165/mo. While I use several hundred Gig per month on Starlink's $120/mo. Residential plan, I doubt that I'll use 20Gb/mo in the Jeep. I got it mainly so I could have cell coverage virtually everywhere and for internet connectivity when at a staging area for a search or rescue.

I would never have guessed that it would work under the roof. I know the roof is fiberglass and all, but I still didn't expect it to work. This is great info! Thank you!

Is it a 12 volt setup? Can it run on solar and lithium setup?

Yes. As I mentioned, I have it plugged into a 100-watt USB-C charger/adapter that is plugged into the 120V outlet on the back of the center console. The Jeep's USB-C outlets do not provide sufficient wattage. I've read that it can brielfly draw up to 85 watts. When I had it plugged into the Jackery for several hours last week, I saw it briefly draw a max of 53 watts. The rest of the time, it was drawing 12-15 watts. The cable I use has plugs on the end for USB-C, DC, and a regular 12V cigarette lighter type plug. It could certainly be run off any system that provides the necessary wattage.

I did the same thing and bought myself the mini yesterday. I also have the hot head headliner and figured it would mess up the reception. But I wonder if it is possible to place the mini on top of some overhead molle panel, between the panel and the freedom top. I'll attach a photo but this isn't necessarily what I'm going to buy. Just for visual aid

The issue i think will be finding a molle panel with enough room in between the freedom panels, but that section where the freedom panels meet don't have the metal reflective film from the head liner so I hope it gets reception there.

I have a similar setup using a MOLLE panel very similar to this one (https://www.amazon.com/KNAWIER-Compatible-2018-2023-2020-2023-Gladiator/dp/B0C77P8SBV); same MOLLE pattern w/ the additional oval'ish in between the MOLLE squared holes. My version required drilling, which I would not repeat if doing all over. In any case I designed and 3d printed a mount for this setup that uses a quick camera release to easily remove the mini when not in the JT. I made a new mini mount adapter that is lower profile and allows me to attach different types of mounts to it. It works awesome, the key factor is I have a Bestop 5245417 Black Twill Sunrider which adds some more clearance allowing to mount the mini. It is a tight fit and I am not sure if this will work with the freedom tops. If you end up wanting to give this setup a shot w/ the freedom panels, I would buy the MOLLE panel, install it and test the clearance with the mini before investing any time building a mount. If it does not work, you can simply return the MOLLE panel. I'll likely make a new thread with my setup for others to reference after I finish a few teaks on my current design later this week.

That's awesome. I'd love the stl for that 3d print file. And yeah the clearance is my biggest concern. Where are you pulling your power from? I was thinking of going off of aux 4 and wiring it in at the footwell of the passenger seat.
