This is why UBI will have to happen or everyone starves. There will need to be a tax on automation, the corporations won't be able to just pocket the savings of replacing everyone with robots, because no one will be able to buy the goods they sell.
We already have UBI. Replace "UBI" with welfare. UBI already exists for anyone that wants it. How many people do you see living off of welfare alone? Even when you have able bodied people just sitting around on welfare. (No, I DO realize there are people that need it, but there are reforms needed and that's for a different conversation) The temptation to become subsidized consumers. They don't want to work because they'll lose welfare. So there's no reason to work or come off, you just get used to living at that level. Especially when you have housing and a free cell phone on top of that.

They are riding the backs of those of us that are still producing. What happens when there are no producers?

1984 and Atlas Shrugged are coming around faster than I imagined

Yeah, the big three should easily be able to replace these unskilled workers. It's not even really a strike because they have so many people lined up ready to do these jobs for less. ?‍♂
All those people that got hired in for less are the ones screaming the loudest right for more pay.

Max welfare around here is $240 a week. A studio apartment is $1000/month. People aren't choosing to live like that.

Welfare isn't UBI. UBI is whatever it takes to live a middle class life, and it's fully attainable once I automate all your jobs

My job will be automated once yours is. The next question is, what do we do once that's a thing? Say we all have nothing to do and no wants? Who decides what I want? Do you want to live on 100 acres in the woods? Or are you a 15 minute city type who's happy with a smart car you get to share with everyone else that lives in your highrise? How do I get more than my UBI so that I can buy the DANA 60s, lockers and gears and 40s that I want under my 30 year old gladiator? Take away my means of production and then you start thinking you can dictate what I deserve and what I want. Where was that tried already? Oh That's right, the USSR.... how well did that go?

$1000/month? More like $2000/month. That's what californication gets you.

That is up to you. What can you provide that automation doesn't? You'll get your UBI and whatever you make on top of it. Pull on them bootstraps and you'll be alright

The focus on CEO compensation always strikes me as odd. I don’t know if the Individuals deserved it or not in any given year, but it’s usually tied to the stock price of the company and other performance targets, not guaranteed, and mostly not in cash.

Compare the auto CEOs pay to what we pay entertainers and athletes without much bitchin‘ and moaning. The NFL is by no means the highest paying pro sport, but it is the season ….so I took a look. The highest comp of the 3 auto CEOs ($30mm, GM) would place them right around #20 of the top paid NFL players.

I’m just saying that the CEO of Stellantis seems a lot more important day-to-day to a lot of people’s lives than say Larmay Tunsil , LT of the Houston Texans, both at $25mm with contingencies. (Sorry Laramy, nothing personal, you deserve it too).

That's a very interesting comparison, NFL player pay vs large corporate CEO. I think LeBron James might be the highest paid in American sports. Maybe some of these ceos need to start preaching about America's problem with systemic racism as an offering the gate keepers.

CEOs can be automated. Left tackles can't lol.

A CEO just takes all the input from the execs and advisors and makes the decisions that will increase stock price. An algorithm could do it better.

Business is conducted on the golf course. No one is going to play golf with a LLM terminal.

considering that corporations and the top tier wealthy investors nake milliins in profits, and CEOs have continuously made increasingly more percentage wise over the years than the acarage worker, I support the unions in their fight for more livable wages. Those who dont can always buy 3rd world items much more cheaply.
I
With what the overpaid bumper installers were offered,it's unbelievable they went on strike.. they act like they are still the craftsman of the 60's, they have demanded so much to make the job so easy, and on top of that, thier union supports the reason we have the inflation we do....
I offer ZERO SUPPORT for the UAW..
I've seen the size of the infirmaries from the old auto plants. Their was a need for representation. I've seen the ads today with tge UAW saying these used to be good jobs. They are great jobs and the record profits are coming offbthe heals of COVID shutdowns and hell GM and Chrysler were bankrupted in the not too distant past. Instead od trying to run your paycheck provider into the ground, be glad they are profitable and hope it leads to security in a potentially unstable economy. Corporations ie the big 3 will not reduce their margins as a result of this and this just pushes car prices up to what are already barely affordable. This agreement will only result in the need for the big 3 to find 20-30% productivity via robotics and streamlining operation. I support the American worker, but this is unreasonable. A 14% increase was a good offer when they already were given profit sharing.
