When your trailer is attached, you want the Sumos to touch and possibly be compress a little. That is when you will feel the difference in stability in ride. If it is not touching, either get another spacer or something mounted to the strike plate to take up the space. When taking it for the test drive with trailer, deliberately run over some RR tracks or an elevated bump of some type. You will know right away what they are doing. When you are on a trip you will be glad you have them.
I had about 1 to 1-1/2" space between the Sumo and the strike plate.
