Has anybody installed a storage box in their tailgates? Likes, dislikes, problems?

My dislike was the $$$ all of these cost and why I haven't. Along with I've not decided to hack my tailgate up and build my own. Considering the dang 3rd brake light in it doesn't always work as it is (on mine) and I've been in it before to reconnect the plug a few times. It's a lower priority. It would be a good use of space for hardly needed stuff or a backup AR, magazines and secondary. ;) Definitely a out of sight out of mine storage space, I'd probably forget about it and be traveling somewhere not allowed with them.

I can see the value in one of the kits that flattens this area, but not really in the storage stuff. If storage came as part of the kit I’d use it for something, but I may go for one of those make it flat so it’s a more viable table typa things one day.

I must confess that I caught the bug for after-market add-ons. In 2024 I was living in Indiana for a few months and bought a tailgate box at a good price. I managed to fly the box (still in its shipping container) from Chicago to Auckland (New Zealand) for free as a second item of check-in luggage. I got my 4x4 mechanic to do the install because there was no way that I was wanting to do the chopping. I am happy with the outcome - I got exactly what I wanted. My recovery gear is the last thing that I need most of the time, except when it is the most immediate thing that I need. I did try carrying my small tomahawk in the tailgate box, but it clanked too much. It is true that the tailgate is quite a bit heavier now, but nothing too unbearable. Maybe the cost was hard to justify for the gains, but the quality is good, I like having my recovery gear easy-to-access, and the strip lighting is handy.

That’s actually very nice use scenario. Kudos
