Completely different engine. They do not even share the same rotating assembly
It is an evolution of the gen 1 3.6. Not a different engine. Basically the same design, but updated to reduce mass and friction and to handle ESS and E-torque applications.

That video was made in 2022. The engine is from a 2014 Promaster. So it's 6 years old. It had to avg 104,333 miles per year. 8,698 per month. 2,006 per week. 285 per day. It never stopped. When did they find time to service it?

Edit; video was made in 2020.
I'm guessing they didn't and that's why the timing chain or tensioners weren't replaced. I'm sure it set codes for that

My network admin bought a surplus'd company F150 with the 5L Coyote, 335K on it. 2014? Original shocks, among other things - but maintained by our truck shop. We were chatting at a remote office 70 miles from home, he's over 350K on it now and it still gets 19MPG. The interior is just old, not decrepit - I remain amazed.

It's killing him to wait for Ford Diesels to come back to Earth on pricing, in the meantime he's driving his martyr pickup - which ain't too bad!

I use Valvoline high mileage synthetic blend on my 5.4 F-150 after 100k every 3-5k miles. At 266k did a front end teardown due to a major oil leak at the timing cover. Not a spec of sludge anywhere. Engine still runs great at 281k. Barely brief smoke on cold start up after extended non use. Lost a total of 1 mpg (13 to 12) since new.

It is not an evolution. I have the evolutionary step on my garage floor. 2019 3.6 to a 2020 3.6 those have a bunch of interchangeable parts, but they can not be used stock in place of each other.

The 3.6s running variable valve lift have way different heads, block rotating assembly, pistons, even cooling, and oiling has changed. Many people look at the control system as an add on or additional piece for fuel, but the VVL has a COMPLETELY different ecm control architecture compared to the older engine, and it relies on it not to come apart. The older system was much simpler and not as critical to engine survival.

The whole article comes from 2020 and has been referred to a couple of times when people complain about what crappy engines they are LOL

Should have a mod take this thread and stick it on the end of one of the "I hate the 3.6" or "beware the 3.6" or "the 3.6 sucks" threads.
Was thinking the same thing - should be made a sticky here.

I run Super Tech full synthetic from Walmart. Meets all the SAE specs. I change it every 10,000 miles. I use the better oil filter, offered by Fram. 341,000 miles and still ticking along.....
