Looking at going up from 255/75/17 on my ‘21 Willys but not making modifications to suspension or anything. What would be a recommended size up? 265/80/17? Or bigger?

From what I’ve learned and been told so far, gearing is important when considering different tire sizes.
I have a Rubicon with 4.10 gears, I am able to go up from 285/70/17 to 315/70/17 without regearing. If I go larger, towards 37” wheels, I will need to regear.
When driving on the highway and the jeep can’t decide which gear to be in, especially on an uphill, where it keeps switching up and down to maintain speed, then you need to regear.
I just got my 35”s (315/70/17)put on yesterday and I LOVE them!

Anyone else have the same opinion?

And going up to this won’t give death wobble or anything, because I’ve heard that could happen.
Death wobble happens with any tire size on a straight axle front end when components are loose or starting to wear. Larger tires can cause steering and suspension items to wear faster.

I have had 35's with 4.10's which were very light ( 52-54lbs ) and 37's that were fairly heavy ( 74-78lbs). The overall driving experience was better with the 35's, as was the fuel economy ( 1-2 mpg better ). Currently on 37's with 3.5 lift and the even appear small on the Rubicon.

Did you down size your tires? I thought the Willy's came with 285/70/17 stock like Rubicons.

The largest thing that you need to do is to change the tire size in the computer. This effects your shift point. Guys go up to 37s on Rubicons all of the time without regearing right away.

Willys has 255’s, a 32” mud terrain. Not sure why they didn’t just put them out with 285’s 🤷‍♂️

You either need a tazer or to use JScan. https://www.zautomotive.com/products/z_tzr_jlm
