I have a like new 2022 sting grey High Altitude with 7500 miles. Car Max just took in a 2021 Rubicon diesel with 16k miles. The only options the Rubicon is missing that I would want is the cold weather package. It's priced at $51k. Trade in value to trade in value, the HA I currently own actually books right at the same value as the Rubicon. The question is considering the issues that have been reported regarding the diesel, would you buy a used one from CarMax? I checked the carfax--It has had 1 owner and 3 oil changes--no other information. Second question is what would be a fair price to pay taking my trade into consideration? I plan on using the truck to tow my 16' travel trail and thought that the diesel could do it a little better when heading out west.

Carmax is a non negotiable dealership. It is a take it or leave it situation when it comes to the pricing they are offer their vehicle at. So you are not going to knock any pricing off their end if you do not like their numbers.

Carmax tends to price their vehicles on the high side of most book values like KBB and such but there is a value to their no question 30 day return policy. They also are pretty good in taking care of any post delivery nit-noid problems.

Another good thing about Carmax is they do not play stupid games of add-on's or play with the numbers in financing. Their in house financing is usually pretty competitive to most banks and most times better.

Definitely--I've bought 2 vehicles from them and am happy with the process. If something is missing or needs to be corrected, they take care of it. It's really a hassle free, no bs type of buying situation. I know that the price is the price, I was just wondering what knowledgable people's opinions were regarding where that line was where the price wouldn't be worth it........

This is just my 2 cents but worth is going to be subjective and really what it feels to you.

From my observation, Carmax most times is pretty good about offering middle range of what KBB trade in value says most times and selling middle to upper end of KBB retail value. You have to find what those are and make a decision.

Lastly, you are looking at a 2 year and soon to be 3 year old model vehicle that has a pending recall to still be addressed. There might be a reason it got traded in that is negative and a possible pig in a poke.

In my opinion, that price is about right for a diesel. Maybe just a bit on the high side but not unreasonably so.

For a comparison, I bought my 2021 Gladiator with 3600 miles on it in July for $47K OTD. Mine is a 3.6L and had everything on it that that one has, plus the cold weather package and Leather with a color matched hard top, except for color matched fenders.

Now, only you can decide if it's the right deal for you.

Only issue I see is that the prior owner might have offloaded it due to fuel pump issues, and carmax wont know this or check for it. I used to live in an apartment right across from a large carmax.

Their test drives constitute a startup, flooring of the car for about 1/2 a mile then they offer a price. Trucks brought cars in daily, some with bashed up panels, 3 wheels and a spare, all kinds of conditions. Most poor.

Not saying they dont have actual good ones, but just saying, they have a lot of shit.

Agreed--From what I've read on the forum, the diesels can be temperamental and can act up in strange ways that might not readily be apparent in a test drive. I don't know why the previous owner gave it up and I won't be able to hitch a trailer to it and head west to see if it's one of those that suffer from overheating/derating when grades come into the picture. That is definitely making me a little apprehensive when it comes to moving forward......

Your HA is going to pull a trailer just as well as a Diesel. I vote no.

better when heading out west.
Wouldn’t do it. I’d spend a couple bucks and go to 4:10 gearing on the HA. I’ve read a fair number that had overheating issues with the diesel while towing, particularly in the mountains and overall I think the 3.6 will be more reliable. I have an HA and actually considered the same as I would love the extra torque the diesel offers but think you’ll be better off where you’re at. That said, yolo so do what ya want!

Definitely--I have already looked into the aftermarket heated seats, but the thing is I could probably live without the seats--but that heated steering wheel would be tough to lose......
