The TSB steering gear has been a great improvement since it was replaced ~9 months ago. However, the steering column shaft seal is bad already. Will be replaced under warranty. If you’ve had the TSB performed, worth a look to see if it’s leaking.

Just curious - how did you find the leak? Was the fluid down or did it drip on the garage floor, etc. or were you cleaning it?
Just wondering to help determine how bad, maybe others will more easily know what to look for, things to watch, knowing how you found it.
The way things have gone with the steering gear - I'm sort of like - geesh, something else to look for?????

I’ll have to crawl under and snap one. It’s where the steering column shaft attaches on the side and not the sector shaft on bottom. It was wet and you could tell where is was coming from. No dripping on the floor, but I have been on a lot dusty roads this summer, so a lot of caked on muddy oil.

I was under there spray painting the scrapes from my adventure last weekend. While I’m under there, I always look around. You would have to get under it to notice. The whole gear assembly has to be replaced because it’s not a replaceable seal. Guess I will be getting version 2 of the new gear now.

Here you go… took this from the passenger side just behind the tire. Gives you a clear view of the steering gear.

OK, thanks. Just was wondering. Maybe I should look at mine........
Smart fellow - touching up scrapes and bruises.

They'd replace the whole unit anyway - like they are doing with axles, would be my bet.

Yeah, I try to hit them before they start to rust. Plus it lets me inspect for any damage.

Corporate doesn’t seem to let them fiddle with the steering gear… probably a liability thing and that’s probably also a good thing. Lol

They wouldn't touch the steering gear. Maybe cost? Maybe the supplier pays for replacement?

I wanted them to adjust the steering gear. They never did. It's easy.

Any follow up with this? Was the dealer able to replace the seal? Noticed in my cleaning/Jeep projects the last couple weeks that I’m having the same problem. Power steering fluid is still perfectly fine and I haven’t lost much at all but it definitely could develop into something more down the road.

I’m nervous that my dealer is gonna be a jerk about it and not cover it, since I have the Steer Smarts sector shaft brace. It’s obviously not related to that input shaft gasket failing, but sinceI “modified the steering system”, they could outright deny it. Ugh

I know I am reviving an old thread here, but figured I would anyway for others awareness. Been having a pretty regular leak on the driveway (size of a baseball overnight), which initially thought was coming from the front axel cover (was dripping down onto the cover). After having that replaced by the dealer, it still leaked, so they looked into it more and found that the steering gear box was leaking.

Shocked I didn't notice a difference in the steering with that much fluid - multiple weeks of it leaking daily - just glad they are fixing it under my extended warranty. Out of factory 36k mile warranty, but they also said the powertrain warranty wouldn't have covered this...

@NoDoorsNoProblem , @WK2JT Were you able to get this replaced under warranty?

I have the same issue and I am still under basic warranty until May 20, which it should technically be covered under. My dealer just called me and I was told that they (Chrysler) will not cover the replacement of this under warranty. I'm at a loss because it is clearly leaking, or at leas seeping, but was told that unless they can actually see it 'dripping' it will not be replaced. My brother has the same year gladiator with more mileage than me and has no 'seeping' or leaking on his. My leak looks exactly the same as yours.

@JeepCares is this something you can lend your assistance with?

Bought a bottle of Mopar EPS fluid, topped it off, went and wheeled Moab for two weeks, and have just checked the levels in the year and a half since then ??‍♂

Right now the oily spot it still there but I haven’t needed to top it up since then. Are you leaking profusely?

Yes, mine was replaced under warranty. Are you having any safety issues like momentary loss of power steering? Wink wink.

You'd be surprised how very little fluid it takes to make a total mess - like the size of a basketball and slung all over the fan and pulleys and other parts.
You could almost empty the reservoir and make a horrible mess - and the steering would still function.
