I am considering looking for a pre-owned 8.4 inch unit out of a vehicle that is being parted out. How difficult is the swap from the 7" to the 8.4". Do I have to take the dash apart or anything?

Not the whole dash, no.

You have to remove the controls just below the head unit, then you have some screws on the bottom of the screen bezel. Pop out the bezel on top, then screws around the screen.
Then the whole screen will pop out and you'll see the color coded connections and remove them all.

Just make sure you're also getting the 8.4" bezel in the deal. If not you'll have to source one.
