Been hearing a clank on bumps that I couldn't pinpoint. Started looking at everything. Was focused on something suspension.

Then I saw this, seems like something is missing here.

Check your brake bolts. The top one is loose too.

Didn't they have to remove the calipers from the axle to install the new lift...?

Looks like someone didn't use a torque wrench and marking paint to show that it's been properly re-torqued after removal during the lift kit install.

No he didn't touch the brakes at all.

I know Evo recommends removing the rear brake calipers to drop the rear axle enough to install the new taller rear springs, I'm sure many other companies recommend the same procedure. Just figured it was worth exploring as an option...

Yes I talked to him. He said he doesn't move the brakes. He told me to get blue loctite if I do it myself. Is it possible he's CYA and forgot the bolt and the loctite both? I guess. But I believe him.

It's at Jeep right now. It's a super simple fix of course but I want to have their hands on it in case it happens again.

Interesting thing is they wouldn't warranty the bolt. He said he needs to return the part to show it's defective. I said well it's probably sitting on the Rubicon Trail right now, isn't the lack of a bolt enough? Nope. But they're gonna take care of it for $20 and it's due for oil change.

I wouldn't expect them to cover it under warranty, since you have a lift on it. If it was all stock, it likely would not be an issue. Getting a dealer to fix it for $20 is the biggest surprise.

My good friend is a huge business partner of them and he had us added to the priority client list when he told the owner we're close friends. Maybe why.

But even before that when I said I didn't wanna pay an hour labor for a bolt, that I'd buy the bolt but wanted their labor he said oh I'm not gonna charge an hour for a bolt

If you’re running a Clayton lift while still using stock brake lines, I can pretty much guarantee that the installer removed the rear calipers during installation. The rear brake lines aren’t long enough to allow installation of lift springs without using a spring compressor. Why would anyone use a spring compressor when you can just unbolt the calipers? Your mechanic is likely just denying the truth.

Would removing the bottom bolt allow caliper to pivot enough to aid in installation.? Maybe not lying that he didn’t take them off (completely), but forgot to put the bolt back.

That would likely have been AFTER the spring were installed. He would have unbolted the calipers to lower the axle far enough to slip the springs in. You can get stock springs out without removing the calipers, but you’re not getting lift springs in without removing them, or using a spring compressor. Removing the calipers is FAR easier. 99% guaranteed...

It's all possible. I'm gonna have him do a little more work and this time I'll hang around because it'll be a small amount of work but will require removing the front springs. I'll see what he does with the caliper.

You don’t have to remove the front calipers to swap springs because of the length of the front brake lines when the brackets are detached from the control arms. It’s just the rears which have to be unbolted.

I removed mine when I installed my Clayton 3.5".
