They are SO nice. Just order one for your next change. I don’t even use a pan anymore. I drain straight into an empty 5 qt. And I know exactly how much comes out as a result.
I have the diesels, so they are 9 qts each. But most of the valves can be shut off to get a new jug. It would save me transferring dirty oil from my drain pan to the old jugs.

It makes it very clean. I even put one on my wife’s Volvo. It takes over 6 quarts. I just turn it off and move the hose to a 2nd container as you said.

I swear I have never heard anyone ask that. Great question. ! What would be wrong with putting one on the outside of the pan ?
Well, if you place a magnet on the outside of the pan, how are you going to view any metal that sticks to it unless you remove the pan? The purpose of having the magnet on the plug, is so that you can observe any ferrous metal particles once you remove the plug (during an oil drain).

Agreed, but a side effect would be to keep them in the pan.

I think I'd put magnets on the filter before the pan. What if the magnet fell off after awhile. You know after it had collected a big wad of metal shavings. Then that big wad would be released all at once potentially back into the motor.
Or maybe you could put a magnet close to the drain plug. Or a donut shaped one around the drain plug. Then remove the magnet right before you drain the oil. Then maybe the metal would be flushed out as the oil drains. Then of course replace the magnet once all the oil is drained.

All good points. The engineers know what they’re doing. Maybe we should leave it alone.

The more metal shavings collected the stronger the retention of the external magnet.
But I’m thinking to just put a really strong magnet on the drain plug for a month or so. It will transfer some of it’s magnetic properties into the drain plug. The stronger the magnet, the stronger magnetism the plug acquires.
I’m assuming the drain plug is Not stainless steel and actually has ferrous properties.
I don’t believe the heat is sufficient to degrade the magnetic properties much either.

Got the bright green light from RCV on condition of the joint. They have no concerns about wear whatsoever. They said the joint was best case scenario. So it’ll get rebuilt today probably.

Why use a drain plug magnet:
Why NOT an oil filter magnet:

If your engine starts shedding metal particles between oil changes, those particles will show up on the magnetic drain plug. This would alert you of possible issues that need investigating.

Thats correct it has to be heated to its curie point if ypur using a neo-dymium magnet it's gonna take about 850F to demagnetize that magnet. Ferrus magnet about 750F with oil in these typically not going over 200F your good to go.

Tentative reassembly until I get the green light from RCV support.

They go together dry. Grease is added before they go in and before the boot goes on.
Had to tease you after I seen how well it was greased prior to the rebuild surprised it ever wore out.😂
