Something has to cover where it attaches to the frame. There's a lot of bumpers available out there that don't have those.

I mean they do serve a useful purpose. I run my bumper with the ‘wings’ off but I wouldn’t remove the bumpers. They are a sacrificial surface that might be the difference between a no damage bumper “kiss” and a costly deductible.

It’s not your truck to worry about, it’s the plastic fantastics everywhere. My wife hit a deer at about 30 mph and other than a spot of hair where the rubber bump meets the steel there was zero damage. A good number of competitors would have had cracked bodywork and trim.

FWIW, those pieces he wants to remove are just flimsy pieces of plastic that snap into the bumper. They are actually cosmetic covers over the bumper crush cans. So they really aren't providing any real protection other than preventing you from seeing the ugly crush cans...

You can actually see in my pics that I cut through them with a razor blade so that my shackle mounts could pass through.

That's awesome. Did you make it?
No, an outfit called Frog Fab in Quebec made them.

I hate hooks for recovery and really wanted shackle mounts; but I got my JTR back in 2020, so when I was looking for options back then there really weren't any, short of replacing the whole bumper. The guys at Frog Fab were making these for the JK platform. The frame horns and bolt patterns were the same so I went this route.

Agreed. I'm searching for a stupid orange hook delete / shackle mount for the rear. It's a simple part to make. No welds. Just a bar with some holes. I can't believe nobody makes it.
