looking to put together some tools to keep on hand in the jeep. Wondering what I need to buy versus raid the workshop for.
I have the trail straps etc that were in my trailhawk. I have 10k shackles. Got a jump start kit and a air pump(electric, slow but it works)

Specifically what do you guys find most useful?

obviously a socket set. What sockets are common? What is useless? Should I put a flex head in or is a regular driver good enough?
things like that.
whats in your bag/box etc?
Thanks for the info!

The Harbor Freight Pittsburg 301 piece kit will give you almost everything you need save for some channel groove pliers and Torx T50-55 bits.

I have the basics: a harbor freight 130 piece set... already have a torx set. also have Rachet straps / D shackles with tow straps and kinetic rope / jump-box / air pump / tire repair kit. Obviously if I was going camping or off-roading I would carry some additional tools. Since I got my new to me JT few months ago, I have to work on my own kit.

Be sure to supplement your sockets with the correct size for the oil filter housing. Here's what I carry in the truck at all times:

  • 6-point socket set
  • Valve core tool
  • Spare valve cores
  • Prybar
  • 3/8 Ratchet
  • Locking pliers
  • Adjustable wrench with alignment handle
  • Slip joint pliers
  • Combination screwdriver
  • Diagonal cutters
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Bailing wire
  • 3/8 extension
  • Knife
  • Universal poly adjustable multi-use flexible fasteners (zip ties)
  • Combination wrenches.

I prefer tool rolls to bags or boxes, things rattle less and you get a more organized work area. This rolls up small enough to fit behind the back seat.

Things I need to add: Allen/Hex key set, Torx key set.

For off road trips I have a larger Rigid tool box that rides in the bed with the air compressor, recovery gear, etc. That has a more comprehensive tool kit, but this is enough for daily use.

There are a lot of good notes in here. I also carry an impact gun 90* impact, and two tire irons…

I stopped by to add some snarky to the mix…

Pack what you think you will need, and just get creative, the reality is, usually when things break there will still be that one tool that was forgotten…. ?? calm and collective attitude helps the creativity get you through…

I know this was your “snarky” comment but there is some real wisdom in what you’ve said. I literally started with a basic SAE/Metric 3/8” drive socket set and a matching combination wrench set and some screwdrivers. Then every time I repaired something, replaced something or installed something, I augmented the starter set with any new/additional tools that I used during that job/project. My reasoning being that if that thing fails out on the trail, I know I have the tools that I used on it previously.

having never worked on a jeep outside of my KL I was hoping to get a rundown of sizes of things I might need.
I have tools, but my rolling cart won’t fit in the jeep. I still have and use my craftsman tools from 1996. I’ve just picked up things as I go and need them, as most do.
for example…this beast
