In Michigan we use our winches a lot in the winter and some in the summer. I carry the following: 30 foot kinetic rope, 2 soft shackles, 30 foot tow strap and a tree saver. We all have winches on our rigs. We have literally winched for hours and never needed anything else. We haven’t needed a snatch block or boards or a gloves (all good things and we all have synthetic rope). So it will depend on where you go and what you do. Good luck picking your gear.

My Opinion:
1. Traction boards - will get you out of most things
2. Cheap sacrificial tow strap - use it to attach and save wear on your winch line
3. snatch block - for doubling your winch torque
4. Tree saver - for wrapping around a tree or rock
5. Gloves
6. A good flashlight
7. a couple of D-rings

You can get almost all this stuff at Harbor Freight

Built mine (nearly) entirely from harbor freight components, other than soft shackles and tree saver, those came from amazon...

lol. Yea, I saw that and appreciate it. Most others just listed generic items though and I was hoping for some more details though I do also appreciate their input as well.

Alittle off subject but I’d throw in a few random size nuts and bolts. A friend in a JK on trail ride we did lost a bolt on the trail and no longer had any steering. Luckily we were able to use a nut and bolt from a hood mounted hi lift to get him off the trail. You just never know what you’ll need.

I recently spent way too much upgrading and integrating my old TeraFlex recovery kit from my JKU into an ARB-based kit for my JT. Yes, I paid a lot for a name brand on my components, but the gear bag itself is fantastic, and I don't mind supporting those who support us (I'll spend far more in gas over the course of just a few months anyways). I also don't do a ton of recreational wheeling these days, so if I'm using my gear, it's because I need it, and I need it to just work without issue. I also carry a fairly elaborate tool and first aid setup, but those are separate topics :D

Ha, I've been cut by frayed winch cable, I wasn't laughing.

As mentioned in the above post, I would add a solid personal first aid kit to any of the kits mentioned in this post. I have seen cuts and smashed hands/fingers even before attaching anything to their vehicle because of terrain or trying to navigate to a tree or another vehicle.

I have synthetic line on my winch so In addition to the standard equipment that everyone else mentioned, I also carry a couple line protective sleeves, a rope splicing kit, and an extra bundle of 3/8 line that I can use as an extension or repairs.

This is what I carry in a small surplus sleeping bag carrier:
1x Recovery Rope
1x Recovery Strap
2x Tree Saver Straps
2x Snatch Rings and soft shackles for them
2x Big soft shackles
2x Small soft shackles
1x Soft shackle hitch recovery point
1x Rope saver
1x Winch line dampener
1x USGI shovel
1x Tree steel cable (to drag fallen trees off the trail with your winch or strap once cut)
And a few pairs of work gloves...

Also, I have a winch and a hitch mounted beaver step recovery point.

I also carry a trauma first aid kit, 2x fire extinguishers, tools and parts, tire repair tools and air compressor, axe, bow saw, machete (a gladius one to keep with the Gladiator theme...), a booster pack, most of the time a chainsaw, and a spill kit.

Oh, and recovery boards!
