Ok, so I have a friend with a HAM license. I'm not going to get one. From what I'm ve read....GMRS is quality enough. He came from Colorado and we are Virginia...now he is too. I want a handheld, and I want oneounted in my Jeep. Keep in mind, I'm a simple Infantry Officer at heart who follows orders and doesn't need the "why". Tell me WHAT to buy....and if you'd like tell me why. I'll mount it IN the jeep, give me the whole lot, antennae included.

Both require a license to operate.

I went HAM but any $50-100 GMRS radio and quality antenna will do.

Tracking the licensing requirements. Did not mind the cost. Don't mind the cost of radios either. Just want to know what we should be using for quality. We also own a farm and I'd love to dual purpose a handheld with a home station when someone is out on a 4wheeler or a deer stand.

Look at the Midland line of gmrs radios. Get one with as much power as you can afford for your application. Many guys use them.

I’m no expert. I have two orange hand held Ruged GMRS radios, and a hard mounted CB pushing an amazing 245 watts out of the antenna (professionally tuned)! The CB is mounted on an overhead Fabtech panel.

I’m just starting out on the radio venture myself.
for the ham radio you need to take a test to get your license and can only transmit on the ham frequencies. It’s a lot more involved than the gmrs but has a lot more coverage.
For the gmrs you only have to pay the $35 and you get the license and 22 channels to communicate on and plenty of power to connect with other radios.
I bought a handheld ham before I knew all this so I’m going to study and take the ham test but I will probably also get a gmrs handheld because some of my wheeling friends use those more than ham.

Ah, so you’re the guy bleeding over into all the other channels.
