Whiny ghost sound from transmission on reverse

Anyone has ever paid attention and heard a whiny scary ghost sound while reversing? I have a '21 JTR if it makes a difference.

I believe it is the cut of the ring gear in the differential. Not the transmission.

Yep, had it forever as well. Pinion gear and ring gear set up, not transmission.

Wouldn't it be the reverse gear being a straight cut gear making that noise? It certainly doesn't sound like it comes from the differential.

2020 Sport S. Mine has made that sound since new. 51k miles now. It doesnt seem to affect shifting or anything.

That's it exactly, straight cut vs spiral cut gears on the forward set. A motorcycle with straight cut gears sounds like that always, but most cars just use straight cut on the reverse.

Yup…. I have a 24’ Mojave and it does it everytime I reverse. It’s an obvious sound (not faint). Makes me wonder what it sounds like from outside the vehicle.

My 2023 Willys Sport automatic transmission makes the same sound since it was new.
