I found the soap only works for so long............ deer actually will "get accustomed to" some scents. So I rotate products and scents. And since they sense odors with their feet as well, stink on the ground is a great deterrent. It's not subject to the direction of the wind when on the ground. They walk near the plants you want to protect and sense the stuff like peppermint oil, moth balls, or whatever the scent of the week is and stay clear. You can purchase urine from any trapping supply company. Deer, tie the small hotel soap bars to trees ,small plants human hair p/up at barber shop.
I've not had so much problem since I started putting stuff on the ground around the plants.
Yeah, I know you can get urine from shops like Bass Pro and so on. Have a large Bass Pro here. It's where I got my coon traps and bait.
Deer here are very used to humans - I and neighbors have found the scent of humans doesn't deter or bother them at all. Unless you act like you are after them, they just give you a look like "yeah, so? What do you want?".
A lot of the web sites telling about how to protect plants and things say "plant them close to your house as deer will avoid your house and human scent"
LOL - I laugh in their face. I guess they've never looked out their window and seen a deer looking back from 5 feet away. They don't care. They've eaten plants right next to our foundation.
I'm in a rural area, surrounded on 2 sides by thick trees and brush and my shop is on the south side just feet from the woods - and those woods are closer to me shop than the house - guess where there's plenty of human urine and yet the deer walk right through the area (as do the coons). They just don't care because they are so used to humans all around.
Last night my wife was looking out the window of our sunroom - it was just starting to get darker, sun was starting to set, and there was a coon, 25-23 feet from the window, digging around for stuff to eat, and looking right back at her. She called for me to come look, he looked up and saw me, and kept on digging around looking for food (I suspect looking for what squirrels had buried and forgotten?) Me being there didn't bother him. And having caught several coons in traps next to my shop - I know they don't care about human scents at all.
They will rip carpet and seats to shreds to make bedding. And they'll crap all over the place - even inside cars. Proof of that is all around my property. They don't seem to care where they poo. If you've ever gone through salvage yards - you'll know how easily they can get in, and what they leave behind. I always take gloves, disinfectant and other supplies when parts hunting in salvage yards.Nothing tore mine up, but I did sit down in my old JK one morning, turned to look to back out of the driveway and there was a raccoon sitting in the backseat. He just jumped out and no harm no foul.
Something also took a dump in the backseat floorboard. Had no carpet though so just sprayed it out.
