Winch installation (electrical) question?

Asking for a friend... After reading all the issues with ESS, fuses, etc. I'm now wondering if he (definitely not me) should have used the PDC N4 for the positive connection for the winch? It was unused and it was high Amp... anyone else using this, or did you connect to the main battery directly?

Depending on his winch and load on the winch, it is very possible to reach over 300 amps. A good solid contactor or mechanical switch rated for such amperage could be used in conjunction with a fuse rated for the wire/winch.

Just got my winch today actually haven't installed yet. But I've install one for a friend previously and went straight to the battery.

I did put a 300amp 12v circuit breaker inline to the battery, both to help if there is a short or something bad happens, but more so I can disable it under the hood by flipping it off.

I have used my winch 4 or 5 times, and one of them was pushing up against it's capacity and haven't had any issues. I figure in a pinch I can bypass it if it does cause issues.
