I'm pretty set on my recovery gear, but was wanting to add a winch line extension to my kit and was wondering what you all normally carry? I have a 12k Badlands Apex, that comes with a 80' rope (Obviously, you can't use all 80' though as you'd need to leave several wraps on the drum).
I recently had to winch my brother up a hill that really opened my eyes to having access to a longer cable pull would be a really good idea. I could see if you ever needed to do an angled pull through a recovery ring, that you'd need a pretty lengthy cable.

What's ya'll's recommendations on size and length for a 12k winch.

I was looking at recovery ropes. 49k lbs with a 16k working load 1"x 20' $70 on Amazon.

They have various lengths for more $$.

I used my old rope( 60' ) to winch down several tree. I didn't want the synthetic winch rope to get damaged. So I used my 20 year old recovery rope as my extention. It kept the tree off of my winch line.

No set recommendations for size or length other than heavier than winch capacity. On length I have multiple extension lines and a new winch line that I started putting a end loop on. How many or how long depends on how far you might need to get to an anchor point, or to get to a point to anchor for a redirected pull. Many people don't even need a 30ft line on a winch but when you need a winch the line will be X feet short. ;) I've been there and why I have multiple winch extension lines. On how and why I have a few is I got lucky to find a closeout store that had bought truck loads of of ropes, winch line, and other cords / lines. Unfortunately I didn't get there before they cut the winch line in sections off the spool. They were selling it for boaters for anchor lines and tie offs lines. The plus was it was being sold by the pound, it sold quickly.

I got the Factor 55 Fast FID and used it to put loop ends on cut-off extra winch rope. Depending on your terrain, you might want 30 foot, 50 foot, or longer pieces. Get some soft shackles to join the lengths as needed.

I like the 3 in straps there easier to stow they fit behind back seat and are cheaper than the recovery ropes

I'm sure you all know, but you shouldn't ever use a kinetic/stretchy rope/strap for a winch extension or anchor.
That being said, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Just be aware, it increases the potential recoil if something breaks.

I have 25ft of Amsteel that I put loops on each end. It is my sacrificial section. I use it to wrap downed trees or rocks or anything that needs moved/dragged. I also have a section that is 150ft, but it's a pain. One of these days I'll probably cut it into two 50ft and two 25ft lengths for easier use.

I have 100ft on my winch. Plus several straps, stretchy and non-stretchy. Along with a kinetic rope. If I was headed for a muddy recovery, I'd grab a few of my chains that usually stay home.

In all honesty, I've only used an extension once or twice.

The straps that I looked at were only 10k working load, 30k break. They do stow better!

That is why it is important to know what the working load is. I think the other way around it a bigger no no. Never use a tow strap as a recovery strap.
