I bought my new 73 CJ-5 in 1973 for $3500.00! My payments were about $125/mo if I remember right.
Yeah, if memory serves, I bought my '81 CJ-7 for $4800. I know that's 10 years later but still...only a $1300 jump in ~10 years.

60k in 2023 was equal to this in 1970...

$462,634.02 (inflation rate of 671.1%)
You got your Google search parameters backwards.

$60k in 2023 would be roughly $7300 in 1970.

Makes sense - I bought a brand new car in 1977 for a whopping $6,000
In 1984, my next new car cost 14,000 - but it was a loaded 4x4 wagon and was bound to cost more than a 2 wheel drive sedan.

We've also changed priorities and how the money is spent over the years.
A 2 or 3 car family is common today, not so much back then.
A cell phone in every person's pocket today - even if little Suzie is only 7 years old.
TVs in every room, computers everywhere. Monthly cable subscriptions topping $100/month are common, eating out is very common compared to 1970, people pay decent money for monthly internet........

So I can't see direct $$ comparisons over the years to be a real indicator any more. People gripe about the 60K for a lifestyle vehicle and yet have all of the above and accept all of it.
Awfully hard to compare 7300 directly to 60,000 today when so much else has changed.
You used to buy that car or truck and be happy with it, few accessories unless you were into JC Whitney. What was there to add? Not a fraction of what's out there now.
Problem with new vehicle costs? Might trim back to a cheaper cell phone instead of that over-priced iphone toy.
Read a book (free from a library if you remember those) instead of paying how much for all of the streaming services)

I've had a large block of foam material set aside in the garage for the last few months and finally got around to this. I used a piece of cardboard to mock up the general shape, traced that onto the foam, and then used my lil M12 handheld mini reciprocating saw with a fine tooth blade and carved out the blocks.

Right after I installed them I made a 2 hour drive and holy cow, the noise reduction was immediately obvious. I used to be able to feel the draft on either side of the instrument panel by holding my hand there, and it's gone.

The nvh reduction as well as the improvement in insulation is a major win for a small amount of effort. Thanks for sharing this.

Wondering if stuffing this cowl area with polyfil like used in stereo installs would solve the problem.
