I have 50k on my 2020 and some small areas of super minor surface rust on the underside. Previous owner although he took care of just about everything did not have undercoating on of any sort. I guess that's better than putting the wrong stuff on.

So I'm going to take my 2020 Gladiator to Steel City Undercoating in Pittsburgh area/Monroeville and have them use their special commercial grade fluid film. But I may just lightly sand/wire wheel/brush the areas of minor rust and brush some Rustoleum oil based semi gloss or flat black first. The guy at Steel City told me don't do anything b/c no matter what paint will flake off. but I want it to look pretty until I get it muddy which is also pretty in my book. And if the Rustoleum flakes off in a few spots so be it.
Never heard of them. Do you have to go back and have it reapplied? I went to Ziebart in McKeesport to have mine undercoated. My 2 trucks before this was done by them.

yeah it was surprising. I am still partial to the hilux we had though
We had a few up armored manual transmission diesel hilux (huluxes?). On paper it sounds like an epic vehicle and it was in that they are rare as hens teeth but I used to call them the gutless wonders. 90hp, 7,500lbs and 6,000ft made for a machine that could barely get out of its own way.

Nice, yeah we just had some plates but nothing really worth while. But it made up for in lighter weight. Sounds like yours wasn't so great. It was certainly nice having a lower profile

I have a significant hate toward the DOT who sprays this crap on our roads.

In the words of Jack Harlow's Churchill Downs lyrics...

"I know in Toronto they got salt for the roads
But school's closed in Kentucky, so I like when it snowed"

In all seriousness I hate that crap here too and I am in Kentucky. Although they do close a lot of stuff down here in the times we get it bad, which is every now and then...They do heavily salt our stuff. At least here in the city (Louisville). But I haven't had any rust issues on my 2020 (Yet and hopefully not).

My 2004 Tacoma with under 150K miles was absolutely destroyed by the salt brine they spray. And they spray it if there's even a whiff, so cars are literally rotting.

But they'll suspend your tags if you don't pay them $14 every two years on top of your registration fees to make sure your O2 sensors are working properly.

Highly recommend a wax/oil undercoat if you plan on keeping your jeep. Needs a yearly touch up and stinks for a few days but it’s worth it. Last winter I had NH oil undercoating professionally sprayed and plan to have it done again this winter before the salt is down. Every square inch of my Jeep’s undercarriage was covered and a lot of the product is still on one year later. Not a hint of rust. A bonus is not having to use the car wash every week. It’s actually recommended to not clean your undercarriage.

i did cavity wwax and amsoil hd metal protect but am considering also doing a fluid film treatment at least for this year since I have a dozen cans already.

Yes you have to have it reapplied every year. The reapplication is like 1/3 the cost of the original application if I remember correctly. Everything is on their site. My girlfriend had it done a month ago on her 2022 JL.

My girlfriend had fluid film applied to her JL about a month ago. I was wanting to do the same to my JT. But I'm wondering now if it's not recommended to be cleaned can you even go mudding, on the trails, etc. Then you have caked on mud and it shouldn't be cleaned off the undercarriage?

I know the fluid film actually soaks into the pores of the metal at least.

my recommendation is if your worried about cleaning go back and read this whole thread. I used cavity wax and amsoil hd metal protect. It is more of a firm and semi-permenant solution. They both dry to a hard waxy type substance and has to be pressure washed hard to be removed so rinsing down is no problem. Fluid film on the other hand is different. Imo its more for road based vehicles as it does wash off over time itself. It stays kinda sticky and is really nasty stuff to work around. It works great based on what i have sen from others but washes off relatively easy. So if your mudding and need to power wash your underside it likely will also wash off the fluid film. the other two products I used are less likely to just wash off.

Never been one to undercoat any of my vehicles I’ve had. I’m up in northern Ontario Canada
My dad gets his truck undercoated every year, looks ok till you start getting down to the metal and realize it mostly trapping in all the moisture
I swear the truck was 20 lbs lighter from changing ball joints once I scraped off all the undercoat to change them lol

I'll admit I dread working under my truck because of the mess, but I also don't want an undercoating that hardens up and can lift off the metal. I'm not sure there is a perfect product that does it all, so you just have to pick your poison I guess.

agreed. Undercoatings can cause some serious and hidden problems. Things like POR15 or ruberized coatings or paint will never go on my vehicles. I am really happy that someone here on the forum told me about the cavity wax, for inside the frame, and the amsoil metal protectant. They are both way better than other products I have used. I think fluid film is good for those in the actual rust belt despite the mess they cause.

Underflush at a tunnel car wash is another inexpensive alternative.

I have used fluid film in the past. NH oil undercoating (and similar oil+wax products) is an order of magnitude better. I should have included that after about a month it does turn more into a hard wax but also “soaks” into the metal. Fluid film does not do that and imo should only be used inside the frame and other interior cavities. Fluid film washes right off unfortunately. NH undercoating, while not recommended to be washed constantly, will stay in place unless washed weekly for a year or a strong pressure wash removes it.
