So i am getting my gears upgraded to 4.88 yukon ring and pinion and my question is what gives with these gears i here alot of bad stuff on them lately. This is the dealer doing the gear swap so they must trust them. Who has them and whats your thought on them ?

If you do your research on Yukon gears. You will find that they will whine, even when set up properly.

15 years ago when I was setting up gears, Yukon was the top of the line. I haven't put my hands on them lately, but some of the pictures I've seen posted their quality has dropped over the past 10 years.

Danas, revos, or nitros seem to be the industry leaders now.

I have 4:88 Yukon gears in my truck. Most of the wine went away after break in period. Sometime I hear a little bit. So far so good. Follow the break in rules.

I went with Dana Spicer 5:13s and I am super happy with them. They require less break-in, are quiet, and the drain magnet had the same amount of steel dust on it as my original JTR 4:10s when I did the 1st fluid change. On the second change, practically no steel dust on the magnet. For a Rubicon with lockers, this smaller amount of steel dust can make a difference because the locker sensor in the differential can malfunction when it gets steel dust in it. In addition, the Dana Spicers are made in the USA, while the other options are S. Korea and China.

Agree, sounds weird. The stock gears you have alaready are Dana Spicers, so, you would think the dealer would want to go with the same brand for the 4:88 swap.

Note: Dana Spicers are more expensive. Don't remember exactly, but, approx. $200 more per axle, so, maybe they are trying to maximize their profit ?

I put Yukon 4.88’s in mine this spring. 15,000 miles or so since. They set up easy and I haven’t noticed any whining or problem. I did follow the break in procedure closely. I’ve also heard things about Yukons since I put mine in but my experience has been really good. Their diff covers have been good too. I plowed the front one into a big rock when I wheeled without a spotter one day and it barely made a mark.

BTW - to resurrect this:

Yukon 4.88s in around Feb of 2023. Whined from the start. Shop said to go through the break-in and see what happens. Never went away.

They replaced them last month with another set of Yukons and the whine is worse. Moving onto Spicer gears now. We'll see how it goes.

Yukon is Chinese made. Quality years ago were good, but now it’s hit or miss if they set up properly and the steel is subpar. Pay the extra and get Dana gears. Dana = OEM Quality and no worries.

The axle shop I use here (EDS Differential Solutions) even sell Yukon as an option, and he said stay from them.

Dana 513’s here. Whisper quiet. Smooth and couldn’t be happier.

No whining issues but it is going back this week after 1500 miles because of a pinion seal leak unfortunately

I have the spicer 4.88’s with Yokohama 37’s. I do have a whine after hitting 30mph’s. Had the gears looked at twice and even though they hear the whine there is no issues with the install. Two different installers checked them. Also running Amsoil which is supposed to be the best but we will see if it goes away. Only had the gears in for 2,000 miles.
