What's another thread.
So I settled on the @ASFIR 4x4 Asfir Engine and Transmission Skid Plate. It was the only piece I wanted given the state of my 'build' currently.
I haven't seen a lot about them here, so I'll post some photos and thoughts.
In the future, if I continue to build up the truck and decide I want a full skid set, I will probably go with Clayton now that I have seen how theirs are designed - but right now I wanted LIGHT WEIGHT and basic protection where none existed.
Overall I think the quality is great, the install is painless, and I think its a good modest option for adding some protection under the engine and transmission and for me (importantly) keeping it LIGHT.
Packaging is good. Boxed up well, then all of the parts were shrink wrapped together.
I did not immediately realize this when ordering - but the support brackets are in fact steel. They are zinc plated, so that's cool.
Bag of hardware and a basic info sheet,.
Tools used. Jack and jack stand to prop the truck up some. You may not need this if you are lifted. Cordless ratchet makes things way less painful, plus a regular 3/8 ratchet and 13MM and 17MM sockets. 1/2" drive impact with 18MM as well. A 13MM wrench. Blue Loctite.
I spent about 30 minutes on the install. That's probably counting getting the tools out. I hung the support brackets from the motor mounts first with the nuts loose, then hung the skid from the transfer case bolts and tilted it up to see where on the trans crossmember I needed to slide in the clip nuts. Then tilt it up and start the center bolts, then loosely install the front bolts to the support brackets - then tighten it all up! I used blue Loctite on the motor support nuts at the top since there is only enough threads for the nuts, no locking hardware.
The center bolts attach to the factory trans protection bar.
It would be cool to have some of those big domed washed for these bolts - but I'm not terribly stressed about it.
Driver side at motor mount.
At passenger side motor mount.
Side view.
