So while removing my doors to enjoy the beautiful weather we've been having, I noticed rock chips in the paint on the hinge barrels. I decided to remove the hinges and have them Rhino-Lined, but the bolts were evidently torqued by Superman. It was going to require WAY more effort than I felt comfortable using. Has anyone done this (removed the hinges), and if so do you have any tips?

I would just touch them up and put a set of mud flaps on the front wheels.

I've got a set of front RockBlokz in the long/wide size and they have completely eliminated anything from getting pushed up the side of the truck.

I recently confirmed this when caught out in the rain with the doors off. Prior to the flaps, I got soaked. With the flaps, everything went out and down.

The bolts are a countersink design, and like all since the TJ, maybe earlier, paint and moisture gets into the taper and locks them tight. One of the easiest ways is to get the exact size torx bit, hold it in a pair of vice grips, heat it till it glows, then cool it off in the bolt... do that a few times, and it might loosen them up without much drama...

Mine came right out using the provided tool from Jeep. Guess I was lucky. I took them out to replace them with locking bolts to prevent door theft.

I would say try technique @Artsifrtsi suggested.

Yep, you are talking about the door pin bolt, to remove doors... I think OP wants to remove the hinge from the doors and body to repaint.

Honestly, it'd be a lot easier to just mask off very well, and then recoat in place... then you don't have the trouble of dealing with the bolts, or re-aligning the doors

Between the paint and I believe RED LocTite, they can be a pain.

And use a hammer-style impact driver. Not an impact power tool, but like a screwdriver that you hit with a hammer. You MUST use the correct size torx socket. The size down will fit because of the paint, but you need to use the right size, or it will strip. I am with everyone else, leave them on, and touch up or line-x that way. Getting the doors realigned is a nightmare.

correct size torx bit and hammer it in before you attempt to turn. I stripped one out and it was a disaster.

I was forced to loosen the bolts on both front lower hinges when my JPeggz mirrors screwed up the alignment of the lower hinges and the doors would no longer close properly. They were extremely tight, yes, but I was able to loosen them with an ordinary socket wrench.

And yes, getting the doors back on straight was a pain. I had to use a lot of trial-and-error, but eventually got it right. Needless to say, I'm never using the JPeggz again.

The good news: no rock chips because I put 3M film on each hinge when my Jeep was brand new.
