Something very similar happened the first time I took my brother off-roading. We were split into different groups and he wound up in a mis-match of vehicles (he was in a Ram truck). He came out with a dented bed and worse it cemented in his mind that off-roading was not for him. I don't know which one of us felt worse. I feel like I should have forced myself into the same group as him but the outcome might have been the same. I hope you both try again. It really is about so much more than simply taking your rig into the wilderness. It is about meeting new, life-long friends that can remind you of that time you gouged the fender on your wife's new JT! It may be costly, but everything on the Jeep can be bought, the friends and the memories cannot.

1. Damage is nearly a forgone conclusion when off-roading and it's not a matter of if but when
No, but at off-road parks, maybe. Drive Forest roads or dirt roads and you won't have damage.

If you don't want to hurt the truck in any way - leave it on the asphalt.
I was in two accidents on asphalt. More damage than I have sustained off road.

Have you seen the way people drive on the asphalt these days? It might be safer to do the trail blindfolded in reverse.

We had a fella on a recent trip to Hot Springs that did severe damage to his rig, front and rear, because he kept following too closely and ran into the Jeep in front of him, then later back into the rig behind him.
Hot Springs? More like Hot Mess.

Some people suck no matter where they are allowed to operate a vehicle.

I'll drop mine off at your house at noon tomorrow.
It's funny I get that response alot but then when I have time in my schedule and I'm feeling like giving someone the gift of a thorough detail, I can't find anyone to take me up. What I've found is, people don't want to be without their vehicle for long. Because I'm extremely thorough and I don't have to hurry because I'm not doing it for $, I ask that people at minimum leave the vehicle with me by 3PM on a Friday and don't expect it back till Sun morning.

I think most people just don't know or care about the difference between a $30 "gold package" wash tunnel and a full restorative detail that would normally cost $300 and up because most people have never spent that much $ to get a vehicle detailed.

Of course I do our vehicles alot but honestly, I get bored with detailing the same vehicle over and over.

I’ve cleared my schedule.

My suggestion to beginners is to seek out your local Jeep groups and most of the better ones will be honest about trail difficulty and Jeepers will help other Jeepers learn the ropes.

Good advice. Thanks! For sure on our end, that's what we thought we were getting out of this. There is really so much more I could share about this event than I've even shared here. In hind site, I wish we had just walked away and said this wasn't the event for us. I think they had way more people show up than they were anticipating and everything about the event was running behind about 2hrs from the plan.

Something I had forgotten until the other day that I reminded my wife of, when they were having the drivers meeting, they split the group into first timers and seasoned veterans. We obviously moved over to the first timers group. We thought and they seemed to suggest they were going to group all the first timers together but then after the drivers meeting, everything became chaos and Jeeps ended up going everywhere and nothing more was made of keeping first timers and pros separate. That could have very well had something to do with our experience.
