Something I don't understand (that may be required in the US) is when stationary at the lights and I apply the hand brake (parking brake) the DRLs go out. I haven't come across this on previous cars and not seen it in the UK at all.

Is this normal, I assume it is to prevent dazzling the driver in front??

The last 3 vehicles I've owned (2 Jeeps, one Chevrolet Silverado), all have turned the marker lights off with the parking brake applied. So I'm going to say it's pretty standard nowadays.

This occurs in a lot of newer USDM cars when Park is enabled. Are you in a 6mt?

I'm in a 8AT. Most of the time knock it into N at the lights, occasionally P if I know they're long ones.

Why?

Kevin
The lights here in Qatar can be 3-5 minutes long (certainly long enough to listen to an entire song on the stereo) and air temps are very high. It is also billiard table flat hence the reason I don't always shift through R to P.

Being a Brit I have driven manuals all my life and I guess there's some habit that says put it in neutral. I also get fed up of peoples brake lights at night and have no desire to do the same to the chap behind me.

And, whether mechanically an issue or not, I don't see why the torque converter should be trying to drive a braked gearbox in the temperatures here.

Personal preference.

DRL's are now required on US made vehicles. They are separate from the headlights. The parking brake feature allows for a fully dark vehicle with the engine still running.

Buy a Tazer and change the DRL dropout.

Not sure why you wouldn't just drop it to park then... way less movement to get back going again when the yellow comes back on...

Personal choice and seldom use the hand brake as it's billiard table flat here. And no yellow here, if you're not moving within 0.2 of a second of the red going green, the locals are hooting!

That's why there's a brake pedal to use.
