I got to work this morning and noticed some drips of dark oil in the gravel after I had parked. After investigating it appears to have come from the oil filter housing. After going back home for lunch I noticed a pretty sizeable puddle under where I normally park. It seems to only have leaked when I used my remote start to warm it up this morning as I couldnt find any noticeable drips for the rest of the day. I have a freebie oil change scheduled tomorrow and I let them know about it.

I just find it odd that it leaked first thing this morning and not afterwards. It has been down in the low teens at night. Anyone have this happen yet? I checked the filter housing by hand and couldn't move it so it seemed tight ?‍♂

I traced it back to the oil filter housing.

It was either this morning or Friday night when I ran to the grocery store as I didnt drive it Saturday or Sunday.

You wouldnt think so, especially since it hasnt leaked a drop since August when the last oil change was done. That was the highest point on the motor that I could find oil residue, on the underside of the oil filter cap. I was thinking it may have something to do with the cold temps but it has been just as cold for the last 2 weeks.

This is the 3rd 3.0 I have heard of dumping the oil. Friend had his whole cooler and filter assembly replaced.

I would believe a housing leak where the cooler attaches...

Im guessing it was a few ounces. Its only been about 5k miles since my last change and I have 43% left on my oil life monitor.
Right - 4 ounces of oil will make a hell of a mess. It always looks like more than it is. Not that your leak is insignificant, it's not like it's lost half a quart of oil.

Is it possible that it's something leaking only under higher oil pressure - not under low pressure?
I know these are VERY different, but I had an oil leak once that happened only on the highway, only faster speeds, and was in such a way that windage from driving and the fan spread it to the point it was near impossible to find.
After trying almost everything I could think of, I got it good and hot, washed it up good, and revved it and watched the area I suspect it was coming from based on my figuring how the wind would blow it, etc.
It turned out to be a seam on the filter that opened up only with higher pressure - about 70 psi, and it was such a small leak the oil had to be thinned by heat.
The filter wasn't that old. Replaced it, cleaned things up again, no more leak.

Thats a good possibility. Maybe cold oil under high pressure with different metals warming up and expanding at different rates is causing a leak at the top of the cooler/heat exchanger.
