I did White Rim on motorcycles last year it my 2 boys. We did 135ish miles from fuel stop to fuel stop. We fueled at the North end of Moab.
Entered via 279, by the Potash ponds, then Telma and Louise point. Exited on the 313.

Definitely fun, but pretty grueling.

Take plenty of fluids and understand there is little to no shade, basically no shade. At one point we were sitting in the shade of the outhouse along the trail.
Now for fluid, take what you think you'll need and double it, now your close, but double it again. If your not from the area you need to realize it is very dry there compared to other regions.
Being in a rig where you can hide and enjoy the AC will definitely help, vs being on motorcycles.

It is very scenic, I'll probably do it again, but never in 1 day. 2 on motorcycles, and maybe 3 in a rig, would be my suggestion. Then you can go slow and really enjoy the area.

Even if its not ACTUAL medical advice, sounds good to me!

I'll be traveling in my truck solo so I'll be able to put my fridge in the back seat and have it run more efficiently. In addition to having my backpack bladder hanging from the back of my seat, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have one side of the fridge full of water bottles and the other side will have all my food, assuming I cook something besides dehydrated food/MREs or cold-cut sandwiches.
Having a fridge will be nice, but I'd suggest adding something besides water. As in electrolytes, gatorade, pedialyte, body armour, or something similar. Gonna be sweaty if you get out at all.

Enjoy. Sure wish Moab wasn't 900+ miles away. I'd love to be able to go a few times a year.

Having not done it, I like your perspective. Good advice there.

@Fpolanco, one of the local bulletin boards to jump into would be https://expeditionutah.com/forum/index.php . I'm SURE there are some White Rim Trail reports on that board. Definitely some solid to excellent knowledge.

I spend a bit of time on there especially now that I have a JT. There may be someone headed down there during that time but most folks I know are heading for canyons and 8000+' elevation to escape the heat in June-August.

I spend WAY too much time on www.rme4x4.com which is Utah based bulletin board. Most of us on there have known each other a long time but we do welcome new comers. Good tech and good peeps there.

Either of those places would be a good place to post up your trip and see if you can find a traveling companion. You'll get a lot of the same perspective of me where we find other things to do during June-Aug

Dear god you did this on a motorcycle!?!? And I'm aware of the "shade" you speak of. The latest video I just watched mentioned it.

I'm hoping my RTT will provide SOME shade but this is great advice! Maybe an awning should be my next purchase!!

I'm actually meeting my friend in Moab who will be coming back from doing the Rubicon Trail. You'd think I learned my lesson from doing Colorado last year around the same time.

I thought elevation would help our cause but was still 90+ degrees during the day. I guess the difference will be at night.

I'll def check those sites out though. I'm always looking to improve my knowledge/skills, especially since I'll hopefully be adding a trailer in the near future.

Why is strapping them not a good solution?
Nothing wrong with strapping in general, if you have a way to strap them so they don't bounce around. I'm just saying MY strapping solution isn't great. There aren't enough tie down points in the bed to hold something small in place. That's all I'm saying. I can go from corner to corner, but the gas can has way too much movement. So I shove a tool box behind it to get some bulk that I can strap against. Triangles are good.

2x wavians mounted via motobilt mounts that I had powder coated black, no issues at all.

And this is maybe what I've been curious for. I'll check motobilt mounts and maybe I'll drill the first hole in the bed. ahh!

The mounts actually fit like a glove horizontally just behind the wheel wells which is where I originally planned to mount them. Drop the tailgate, flip the latch arm on the mounts and done. Super easy access. That plan burned after I installed my bed-slide though, I lost just enough space to where the cans themselves would fit but not the mount so I ended up mounting them on the slide as you see in the pic. I would have loved to have them behind the well though.

I had (and quite liked) a 4G Rotopax on my 4Runner. It did well but honestly 99.9% of the Rotopax I've seen were on pristine trucks on asphalt. Admittedly I got one because it was cool looking and "everyone" seemed to run them. No regrets, they are awesome, but after enough time we wanted to go with something more durable and interchangeable. We've got water jerrys too so sometimes we'll rock 10G of water if we are camping somewhat locally with no additional fuel, sometimes 1:1 but then when we are covering lots of ground both are for fuel. The money I saved not running an array of rotopax allowed me to get these bulletproof mounts from motobilt and then some.

I hear you. I used bungees to hold my compressor to the side of the bed and that thing will bounce around on a bumpy trail.

Yes really.

Your sign implies that it’s near a gas station. Fill your tank. Having 6 gallons of extra fuel on board would let me drive almost 450 miles.

most people don’t drive to 0 miles before starting to look for fuel

What you said was…
I squeeze 5.8 gallons in there. Enough to get me to the closest gas station no matter where I am in the continental US
Which implies that the ~6 gallons can get you to the nearest gas station.
On a good day, that’s about 120 miles.
There are places where even 120 miles is barely enough.

And anyway, the post was meant to be humorous.

I also should have said contiguous, not continental. But c’est la vie!

I had a 5 gallon wavian Jerry can with me for my trip from Syracuse NY to Utah last September.

I filled it in Syracuse and it for the entire round trip drive (including a couple days in Colorado on engineers and cinnamon passes) and never opened it until I got home and emptied it.

I never smelled any gas at all.

I strapped mine using a ratchet strap to my trail rail, but I plan on building a more organized solution that doesn't require ratchet straps, that's a pain in the rear getting things in and out multiple times a day..

This the beginning of my layout in the rear. I ended up moving the fridge to the passenger side, but everything else stayed where it is here.

Sorry to hijack, how long did you need for that whole trip?

My initial plan was roughly about 17 days, but I had some work come up in Kansas city at the new airport which fell right in the middle of my trip. Although it did mean that I got paid mileage to drive to MCI lol..

I took one overnight (camped out around Acton Lake OH) to get to Kansas city from Syracuse. That was about two 9 hour days to get to MCI.

After working for a couple of weeks, this was the planned trip from MCI:

The drive to Chalk lake was a long one, I'd break that up if I had to do this again, although I wouldn't be going through MCI again, so the route would be a bit different..

I will say that I was a bit aggressive with the schedule and it resulted in too much driving and not quite enough relaxing.... It was still an awesome trip though, I'm looking forward to doing it again (with some modifications) later this year hopefully.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions...

This is awesome!! One of my hopes for this trip is to also camp out on a trail...either Top of the World or Chicken Corners.

Looks like you had a blast!!
