Before I had my Gladiator, I had a 2000 Cherokee XJ. If I'm being honest, I think that was the pinnacle of Jeep, and the perfect vehicle, but a 23 year old vehicle with a job that requires lots of moving and my large family made it unrealistic for it to be a daily forever.

That all said, these generated images of the upcoming Jeep Recon give me XJ vibes, just modernized. Is it just me? Am I crazy?

Yep, your crazy. The XJ was a beast and the inline 6 was bullet proof. I had a 89 model that still running with almost 600,000 miles on it and it's 4th owner. Still got the original engine and transmission in it.

The Recon looks like a nice vehicle though.

I'm more thinking just in design cues. All around independent suspension and how heavy and expensive this thing is won't compare to the XJ in any way. But I'm hoping it will at least do well off road. So far the EV benchmark is Rivian for off road performance which leaves a lot of room for growth. If anyone can do it right, should be Jeep.

I hope they get it right. What scares me right now about the EV's are the batteries. My brother just bought a Nissan EV and it's got about 1400 miles in it and they just had to replace the battery or batteries in it. They was headed out of town and stopped to charge it about 150 miles away and it would not charge. They found the nearest Nissan dealership in Greenville SC and had enough charge to make it there to get it looked at. They said the batteries had to be replaced in it but under warranty. About 3rd person I know personally who ha e had battery issues at a early stage out of a EV. It's a nice concept if they can get it right across the board in all Makes And Models.

Also off roading of a EV seems a little scary because having a failure off the beaten path is gonna cost you double or triple to get it out of there.

I honestly don't know anyone with an EV yet. Drove a Tesla at one of their stores once. It was fast. You're not wrong about going off road though. EV's are going to require some crazy recovery rigs, again with weight and not being able to drop them into neutral. BUT, engineering should be able to solve some of those problems, and make it damn near bulletproof.

I had a 1999 for my work vehicle. It was great! I took that truck places in stock form that I would never go if I owned it! ?
I treated mine like that once I realized I wasn't going to keep it forever. It just would not quit. Dented, scratched, and abused, she got me out of everything. Except door deep sand. But that was just a one time thing.

I had a 2001 xj, I definitely miss it. I beat the crap out of it offroad and it would not quit.

Ask this guy what he thinks of his "Benchmark" now.

Did you see the video of the Tesla pulling a Rivian out of the snow? Yeah, the thing was stuck bad. The Tesla hooked onto it with a strap and pulled it out of the snow backwards. I had to laugh - seriously, a Tesla pulling the Rivian out of the snow bank.

I have a 4.0 from a 94 ZJ in my Eagle SX4 .......... so I can say I still own one.

I'm jealous, that sounds like a lot of fun
It is a fun car, and I've had fun restoring and refurbishing it over the years. It's one that I can say "it's not for sale".
Plus - it's all Jeep heritage.

Jeep Gladiator Is it just me? SX4-at-Cordova-2022

Engine is 1994 ZJ 4.0, otherwise stock drivetrain. I transplanted the Jeep PCM, PDC, found an air box from a MOPAR van, had to move some things around to get it all to fit.
I really wish I had kept track of what I grabbed the coolant recover tank out of at the pick 'n pull back then. If it goes bad, I have no clue what car I got that from.
Lots of wiring, NOS parts, and time.

The black door handles are also Jeep half-door handles. Originally even on the Sport, the handles were chromed and I didn't like that look as well (besides they had 40 years and almost 200,000 miles on them)
