The Post Office has, at least for the last 50 years, had regulations specifying mailbox height. Few people seem to actually ask about it before putting up a box, and many assume no problem since it was that way when they moved in. Whether or not it's an issue seems to depend on the carrier and their vehicle. This Post Office is probably getting an upgraded delivery fleet and wants to make it easier for the carriers to deliver. Our box sits too low, but it has been there since 1985. We replaced the box with the largest one available when we moved in. There's never been a complaint, probably because 98% of our mail will fit in the box and they rarely have to come to the door. Our current carrier, started doing the route about a month ago, drives a postal van and has to get out for the boxes on his route. Some of the boxes have disappeared over the years. Almost all of the new construction uses the cluster boxes.

And yet when they drive by in their little sedans, they have to reach up to put the mail in.
Anyway, that's one small area in one not heavily populated county.
140 mail boxes out of tens of thousands. And that made the news? Some Karen contacted KCCI and bitched about it. Fix the dang mail box and move on. Good grief.

>> Coincidentally, while we were chatting with Farrand, the mail carrier drove by, stopped, delivered the mail with no problem, and drove off. It's not clear why the mailboxes have to be raised now. <<

Sure, because that person was driving a small car. People usually drive their own vehicles to deliver mail here. There aren't officially owned postal vehicles in most of these places. Once in a while we have a mail carrier who drives a Jeep and reaches straight across while those in cars reach up, and I reach down to get it if I'm coming home from someplace and stopping at the top of the driveway to get the mail.

Crazy what people gripe about - fix your mail boxes!

LOL - no, carriers drive their own vehicles in most of the rural counties here.
I live in Polk County, 20 minutes from town and the carriers out here drive whatever they own.

Jasper county is fairly rural and if like here in Polk County away from Des Moines, you never know what vehicle will be delivering your mail - an old WJ on some days, an old Oldsmobile another day, maybe a later Chevy Impala.

IF these people bought posts and boxes from Lowe's, Menards, Home Depot, etc. - it's pretty clear how to do it. Or ASK. But many just sink a post or use some old stuff laying around, a few go buy treated 4x4s and sink them and that's that.

Our neighbor is picky and loves a neat lawn. So he put up a post right on the property line and has both of our boxes there. Ours is the big one as I get big boxes of stuff to restore almost every week and prefer things be left there instead of out in the open on steps or something.
The outer two "boxes" are for newspapers which can't be left in mail boxes. We don't get a paper so it just sits there.
It's regulation height.

Maybe there's a new postmaster, maybe carriers have been complaining and they have finally decided to do something about it, who knows but I just can't see why this made the news at all. "I'll get around to it" is the guy's response. LOL - I can just imagine.
1 hour or less and you are done.

" The Colfax postmaster sent out notices that say mailboxes must be a certain height off the ground — 41 to 45 inches to the bottom of the box. And if not corrected, the post office might stop delivering mail after May 14. "

Sorry USPS, but these are your own regulation

So what is your point?
That's exactly what Colfax postmaster is telling these people - that their box must be 41-45" above street level. And that's true. You just supported the position of the USPS and the Colfax postmaster.

Why are you saying "sorry USPS but these are your own regulations" - and that's what those Karens are crying about.

(UPDATE - they won't stop service but WILL send more notices and I just know some of those morons will ignore the notices and be stupid about it. )

The time it took for that clown Farrand to talk to reporters about it and all of the man-hours involved in that story, many of those mailboxes could have been fixed by now.
"I'll get around to it" LOL - that's a joke. So why not fix it and stop taking your 15 minutes of fame?

In the time that turkey took to gripe and moan and groan about regulations - he could have fixed his and at least one or two of his neighbors' mailboxes.

Colfax is just minutes east of me, and I have a feeling I could guess the area.
Fix your damned mailboxes - you aren't regulation.
So they missed it for years, so what if you slid by.
