Went to go rotate my tires for the first time last weekend and for the love of God, what size are these lugs?

FYI they are the factory jacketed nuts and they WERE undamaged.

I know the book says 22mm, which is what I tried to use. It's almost like they used a 22mm nut, and THEN put the steel jacket over it. I have to hammer a 22mm on. I tried the next up and down SAE sizes and they didn't fit right. I thought that maybe the two 22mm sockets I have are cheap, or wrong, or whatever, so I ordered a new name-brand 22mm impact socket, and same thing - had to hammer it on. 23mm is way too big.

Thing is, I then tried the factory lug wrench, and same thing! I pretty much had to hammer that one on.

As if rotating your tires isn't enough of a pain, do you know how much longer it takes to knock the socket on each lug, then have to knock it back out again? Every single one?

So that makes 3 22mm sockets, multiple other metric and SAE sockets, AND the factory lug wrench that are the wrong size!

Anyone else run into this?

I'm using a 6 point, 22mm deep well socket.

I’m using a 22 as well. Have used various brands. Husky and Milwaukee impact mostly. The Milwaukee pulls away from the corners and uses the flats a little bit more which may be easier to fit this being said, though the Huskies work fine.

...and recommend a new set of lug nuts
THIS^^^^ ALL DAY!!

@Darel As you are finding out, those jacketed factory lug nuts can be problematic when/if the jacket starts to separate. I learned this with one of my earlier Jeeps and was letting the shop spin them on and off with their impact wrenches. What's worse is when you find out the darn things cost north of $20 each.

Do yourself a favor and buy a good set of McGard or Gorilla (I have Gorillas on all 3 Jeeps now) and be done with those factory lugs. This isn't the sexiest upgrade but, man, is it a headache reducer.

The same thing happened to me on my Challenger RT.
Garaged for 11 years, never driven in the rain or snow.
I had to pound the socket on to get each lug nut off, then threw them in the garbage.
We just bought a brand new Scat Pack Charger and Dodge is still using those shit jacketed lug nuts.
I bought all new McGard lug nuts for my Gladiator.

It’s not just on Jeep products. My Ford f150 with chrome covers or stainless covers were the same problems. I have replaced the lug nuts on all vehicles with solid stainless or anodized lug nuts. Problem solved. It is annoying if you happen to have to change a flat on the trail or road. Powder coated gives you the same problem.

You might try a 7/8” socket, which is a hair bigger than 22mm. Same problem on my OEM nuts, the jackets get a little mushed and the 22mm stops fitting. Same problem on my 05 Tacoma as well- and same ultimate solution; replace with solid lug nuts

Sounds like some corrosion/rust jacking under the stainless cap. I have had bad luck going to full chrome lug nuts because they will eventually chip and start rusting also. I usually just find a set of like new OEM take offs for usually under $30 on Ebay if I am needing to replace.

I have used both craftsman, and Tekton 6 point sockets.
TEKTON 1/2 Inch Drive x 22 mm Deep 6-Point Socket

For plain jane non-locking black lug nuts I found these from (link below), they seat well onto the stock Mojave wheels. These are on my wife’s Mojave (Sting-ray).

For my Mojave (Black), I went with this set of (20) all spline lug nuts, basically all locking lug nuts.
(20) black spline locking lug nuts for every wheel lug, for Stock wheels.
