UGLY !! I might consider 4xe gladiator but not that thing ?. I guess at 68 and many toys, motorcycles, muscle cars, hotrods, boats etc.. over the years I just resist the big changes !! But it’s coming no matter what we do or think ? However I think Tesla’s are starting to grow on me with their performance ?

Can you easily remove the roof and doors? How about aftermarket customization options? I don’t hate the looks and I’m sure it is smooth to drive and packed with the latest tech, but for the reasons above and multiple others it isn’t comparable to the JT IMO.

I dunno buddy, that Mojave is like a pretty woman turning every head in the room. The Rivian looks like it would cut in line at the buffet just to clean out the Pung Kou Chicken and Crab Rangoons leaving you the bill.

Thanks for the comparison.

I am not too familiar with the Rivians, but I’m curious to ask about the ride quality. How was it and how did it feel throughout various speeds?

Thank you!

First, I would never, ever, trade a gasser for....that. Second, I've read more than one article stating that the Rivian is not going to make it. I guess we'll see.

Hard for me to compare because they are so different. I like my Mojave. The Rivian is beautiful, lots of neat innovation built-in. They don't do the tank turn or crab walk like they advised before they came out, oh well. The one I think is butt ugly is the Cyber Truck, evidently the first production Cyber Truck has been completed. I'd like to see a comparison of those two.

If this was a poll I would vote HELL NO!
But opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one.
Make sure you have your GAS or DIESEL GENERATOR with you when you go off road...don't think there will be any charging stations.....lol

I think it's cool someone is building overlanding focused EVs. I think it's unfortunate they gave it a face. I don't think I've ever liked looking at a vehicle that looks like it has a face.

OK, I'll ask. What are your personal opinions of each vehicle? Would you stick with the Jeep? Why or why not?
I‘d be interested in your thoughts as well. What kind of “mileage” did you get?
Thanks for the comparison.

Some answers to questions so far.

Mileage

- I drove a little less than 200 miles with it over the weekend. I don't have an easy way to charge at home so I used the fastest available one in my area (Electrify America). It took about 1:15 min to give me 190 miles of charge. I live in CA (so, high fuel prices and high electric prices). Using the fast charging station, I got the equivalent a little over 19 mpg using local gas prices for a comparison. A far cry from the EPA rating of 70 MPGe. This is CA though and I'm not doing any charging at home, so ymmv.

Ride quality

All-Purpose/Default Mode

- On the default setting, this was good. Definitely has better road manners than my Mojave, although I was expecting it to be significantly more comfortable when in reality it was only slightly more comfortable than my JT. In fact, their is a very pothole ridden road near where I live where the Mojave feels slightly better to drive over than the Rivian. That being said, the Rivian turns much flatter and handles much better in this mode than the JT.

Sport

- Significantly firmer (as you would expect). You can still feel that the vehicle is heavy, but it handles better than expected. Overall, I think they tuned it well here, although going into/out of driveways is much "bouncier" than expected (as in it oscillates much more instead of just a harsh or single firm bounce). Handles much better than I would expect any truck to be able to.

Offroad

- This is not my vehicle and I only have it for a limited time, so I won't really be willing/able to test this.

Performance

- Definitely like a Tesla in this regard. Startling acceleration. Very fun, and my favorite thing about electric vehicles. Supposedly a 0-60 of 3.2 seconds which is crazy for ANYTHING, not specifically just a truck.

Aesthetics

- Looks like those on this forum our torn on this. While I definitely prefer the Jeep over it, I do like the looks of it. Their are small things they did for aero (like ducting to the tires) and other small accents that you can only really appreciate when you get up close.

Interior/Infotainment

- Nice place to be in. Feels higher quality than a Tesla
- Although I don't mind the look of a giant screen, I DO mind all the controls being a part of it (I like physical buttons for volume, AC, etc).
- Although the screen isn't hard to use, the maps function kind of sucks. I had trouble with it taking a while (as in minutes) to load the destination and generate a route for me. This wouldn't normally be a problem if it supported Android Auto or Apple Carplay, but it does not.

Other Features of note

- Love the extra storage. The gear tunnel and front trunk provide a ton of lockable storage to the point where I wouldn't mind not having a tonneau cover like I have on my JT.
- App features are nice. Being able to use it to cool down the cabin on the 105+ degree days before I get to it is convenient.
- "Kneel Mode". My wife appreciated this. Basically, the vehicle lowers when you park so that it is easier to get in and out of, and then raises back up when you begin your drive.

Some other thoughts on the Rivian (and somewhat EVs in general)

- For me, electric vehicles are an instant "NO" because I don't have a way to charge at home (I live in a apartment complex).
- I've driven both a Tesla and this Rivian now. I think they make great in town commuter vehicles, but I would always want a second vehicle for driving on long trips (they could never be my only vehicle).
- I take my Jeep camping. In fact, I was on a 4 day trip less than two weeks ago. Based on the range, I "might" have been fine with the Rivian, but I think the trip would have been more anxiety ridden using an EV.
- The instant acceleration is a LOT of fun. I'm not one who would buy an electric vehicle for the fuel savings or environmental concerns (I don't entirely believe the hype of both of those being substantially improved on an EV). I WOULD buy an electric vehicle for the performance aspect though if they can get one that is fast and still "feels" lightweight (aka something small, not a truck).

Overall

I bought my JT to be a great all around vehicle. It can do truck stuff, go offroad, I can take the top and doors off, and it fits my whole family for trips. This is definitely not a replacement to the JT for my personal use case. My Gladiator is our primary trip vehicle (for example, I'm driving 500ish miles tomorrow, over a 1000 within the next week) and that's something hard to do on current EVs without extending trip time. I also find joy in taking the doors and top off even while driving around town, which is obviously something no other truck can really do at the moment. I can't comment on the offroad capabilities of the Rivian, but I would be hesitant to go somewhere secluded (out of cell phone reach) when doing any off-roading that had the possibility of breaking something in any other ICE vehicle.

I'm overall happy that I've had time to drive it (honestly, I just like driving different vehicles from time to time). It's not something I would personally buy, but I could see myself buying either a cheap small EV for around town use or a lightweight EV for the acceleration/fun side of things.

Yup I’m on the exact same boat as you regarding why I would potentially get an EV. They’re a hoot to drive. Just unbelievable acceleration and pedal response.

Very well stated! I appreciate the indepth thoughts for sure. Last year I was camping in West Virginia and happened upon a couple who had just got their Rivian delivered to them the month before. They put a tent on the bed and go all over the place with it. For them, it makes sense because it’s just the two of them and they can plug it in and charge it right at the campground every night.

I got the opportunity to drive a Rivian R1T for a few days, thought I'd share some photos comparing it in size to my Mojave. Keep in mind I am on an AEV lift (but stock 33" All Terrains).

Although I have thoughts on it so far, probably not going to go into depth much about that unless asked since there is already an multiple page thread somewhere on hear about the Rivian.

Photos are taken at various heights (Standard, Offroad, Sport)

Sport (Lowest)

Some side shots for size. They are VERY similar front/back if going from bumper to bumper, although the body itself extends out more on the R1T (flush to bumper).

I guess if they stick to accessible camp grounds their plan is OK. But if they go off road in it and it shits the bed then they're seriously screwed if it's not wide open ground. No towing an electric vehicle with any of the wheels on the ground or your warranty is gone.
