I was in a meeting one day and someone asked a question... The speaker said, "There are no dumb questions, but that is as close as Ive ever heard".

So here's mine: Ive read a LOT of posts on this forum about whether member's Gladiators are able to run in 8th gear, or if they run in 7th, 6th, etc. but, I have not been able to find any gear indication. My F250 has an indicator that shows what gear the transmission is in (1-10). I see nothing on the Gladiator to show this. Are people figuring out speed vs rpm for their gear ratio and just marking shift points mentally or am I totally missing something on the displays?

In your Jeep, go to settings on the screen, and there’s an option in there to display the gear on the dash. It’ll show up as a small sub-character next to the D when in drive ( assuming automatic ).

sorry that I don’t recall the exact steps, to share with you here. That should be enough info to help you search for an online vid or forum post.

Well, There Ya Go! Dumb question answered and instant gratification achieved!
I stumbled around in the menu and fount that "Current Gear" was turned off. Backed up the driveway and put it in Drive, showed a D with a subscript 1.

The instrument cluster display is configurable. You can set it to show you the gear selection all the time.
This is one of the menus I hadn't looked at yet. It isnt available when driving, so I didn't realize how much was in there.

For the record, mine runs in 8th all the time, going 50mph on a flat road it's in 8th. Going downhill at 40 it's in 8th. So long as the speed is nearing freeway limits and the throttle input is light it will hold 8th until we ask more of it. It's a good thing as that's when I'm getting 25+mpg which helps boost the average from when it frequently drops into the single digits.

With the 3.73 ratio I find that mine is in 7th a lot when it's windy. I once drove all the way from the west mixmaster to the east mixmaster along I35/80 in 6th and 7th gear because the wind was 15 mph or so. Many times it won't go into 8th on the flats or mild hills if it's windy.
That's Overland, 3.73 gearing, gas engine.

And you can configure the heck out of these.
I took this picture the other day after my range and current mpg came back by magic after having disappeared by magic a few days before. I had accused my son of changing some settings - but nope, it was configured fine, and as I was driving along, the instant mpg just suddenly appeared again.

Im on my 3rd fillup and my mileage is improving. So far the dash is showing 18.4 on this tank. Mostly highway driving.

Definitely a good average mpg! I need to tinker around some more with the configurations to customize it in both my wife's Sport and my Mojave.

More times than not, the owners manual answers a lot of these types of questions. You can get PDF copies that are searchable through the jeep.com owners area.

My suggestion would be to do your brain a favor, and leave it off. I found myself watching it constantly, and it wasn’t enjoyable. As long as the Jeep drives good, you don’t need to waste your time monitoring what gear it’s in. Just my opinion though.

Really? I only watch while towing and seeing it hunt or other times I might be gathering info or troubleshooting or curious. First mod I made was gear display.
If something feels off, I look, otherwise I frankly forget it's there. I sometimes look to see when it does a downshift when I hit the brakes just right going down a hill to see if it dropped 1 gear, or two, when I feel the engine braking kick in on a hill.
I can ignore it if I don't care or want the info. But I can look if I want it.
I wish the cluster in these gave a lot more info than they do. I prefer info at a glance, otherwise ignore the dash.

if you press < or > on the steering wheel buttons, it will add/remove the range and avg

That could be the left/right input from the left side buttons of your steering wheel. Some of those dash displays ( up/down ) have variations ( left/right ).

I have the manual and have a NEED to be in 6th gear all the time. But the Jeep is geared like a corvette. Mild grades need to be downshifted, medium grades are 4th (1:1). I’ve decided that I’ll not worry about it and try to just stay in the gear that is the most comfortable. The mpg doesn’t really change till you really start winding it up in lower gears anyway.

When the FCA 8 speeds first came out they would never shift into 7 or 8. They’ve programmed them a lot over the decade or so.
